UNI to host two-day 'Forum for Diversity: Integrating Latino Heritage into the Curriculum' Friday and Saturday, March 8-9

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A two-day conference, "Forum for Diversity: Integrating Latino Heritage into the Curriculum," will be held Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

Expected to attract about 150 K-12 educators and teaching majors, the forum is being held to provide information and interaction relative to diversity, specifically Latino perspectives, according to Christine Canning, UNI associate professor of education and resident coordinator for UNI's San Antonio Student Teaching Program.

"Latino perspectives are often missing from K-12 curriculum," she said. "As this population has the highest drop-out rate of any U.S. minority group, we want to provide teachers and future teachers with information that will help them serve this population and keep them in school. It is also important to educate all of our students who will be citizens alongside Latinos in their future."

Friday's events will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Slife Ballroom of the UNI Commons. The focus will be on the Latino perspectives on five themes: the encounter of Spanish and native Americans in the 1500s, blending of cultures in colonial Mexico, uneasy neighbors (the Mexican and Spanish American Wars), civil rights and current issues. Featured will be a number of speakers from Iowa, New Mexico and Texas.

Saturday's sessions will take place in UNI's Seerley Hall, from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m

The forum is sponsored by UNI's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Department of History, the College of Education and the Office of Student Field Experience in the Department of Teaching. Schindler Endowment Funds, through the UNI Foundation support registration by UNI students and faculty.

Among the speakers will be: Julio Noboa and Elsa Duarate-Noboa from San Antonio; John-Paul Chaisson-Cardenas from the University of Iowa; Floyd Solomon, a Laguna Indian from New Mexico; Nora Jaffary, UNI assistant professor of history, who is finishing a book on women in colonial Mexico; Ed Osowski, associated with the UNI history department and Hawkeye Community College; Paul Horton and Mary Salazar-Guenther, both instructors in teaching at UNI's Price Laboratory School; and Julie Bartlett, a UNI graduate who has taught on the Zuni reservation and currently teaches in Albuquerque, N.M.

The conference is open to the public. For more information or to register, contact Tom Connors, UNI assistant professor of history and conference coordinator, at (319) 273-2994, or via e-mail at thomas.connors@uni.edu.
