Time, location changed for women and violence lecture Monday, March 6, at University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Feminist sociologist Ann Goetting will deliver a lecture based on her new book, “Getting Out: Life Stories of Women Who Left Abusive Men,” at 3:30 p.m., Monday, March 6. The lecture will be held in the Hemisphere Lounge of the University of Northern Iowa's Maucker Union, and is open to the public free of charge.

The time and location are a change from that originally announced. Her address had been set for 7 p.m. in Seerley Hall's Great Reading Room.

Goetting is a sociology professor at Western Kentucky University. She says battering is about “a man using male privilege derived from a patriarchal social structure to coerce a woman, sometimes through fear for her very life, in an exploitive intimate relationship that holds her hostage and in servitude to his personal needs and desires.”

Her lecture is part of activities planned at UNI for Women's History Month, being celebrated throughout March. The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Women's Studies and SAVE are sponsoring the event.

UNI Gallery of Art presents `The Swope Art Museum and Its Founding Collection: A Fresh Look at Regionalism'

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Gallery of Art will present a lecture by David Butler, director of the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Ind., on Tuesday, March 7 at 8 p.m. Butler will give an informal slide presentation on the renovation of the Swope and its collection in Room 111 of the Kamerick Art Building.

He will focus on the Swope's Regionalist Art collection and the Art Deco galleries designed to house it. According to Butler, the stylish Art Deco galleries in Terre Haute's Swope Museum, built in the early 1940s, have suffered unspeakable indignities over the years, reflecting long-held negative attitudes toward Regionalism. Butler successfully spearheaded a capital campaign and has refurbished and restored the galleries to their original state.

Butler received his Ph.D. in Art History from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. and has served as the director of the Swope Art Museum since 1995. He will be on campus March 7-9 to judge the annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The exhibition will open to the public on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. For more information, call the UNI Gallery of Art at (319) 273-2077.
