UNI hosts wall-climbing competition

The UNI Wellness/Recreation Services' Outdoor Climbing Club will host a wall-climbing competition Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, from10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at the climbing wall of the Wellness and Recreation Center (WRC). The competition is open to college students, and organizers expect about 60 participants from the Midwest.

Competitors will square off in a series of categories, using speed and skill to score points.

The event is not open to the public.

'Negotiated Identities: Undocumented Latinas in Iowa' UNI Crow Forum topic Monday, March 4

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "Negotiated Identities: Undocumented Latinas in Iowa," will be the topic of the University of Northern Iowa's Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum series at noon Monday, March 4 in the Maucker Union's Embassy Room.

Anne Woodrick, co-director of the New Iowans Project and UNI associate professor of anthropology; and Phyllis Baker, associate dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and associate professor of sociology; will present research findings on Latino women from data collected over the past several years.

Through in-depth interviews, Woodrick and Baker have looked at women as immigrants in Iowa and how their everyday lives and identities. The move affects home, family life and cultural practices. The CROW Forum series will continue April 1, with "The Mother as Heroic Icon: Perspectives of Sikh Motherhood in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries," by Louis Fenech, UNI associate professor of history.

UNI ROTC hosts Hibbs memorial ceremony

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa’s ROTC corps of cadets will conducts its annual ceremony in honor of 2nd Lt. Robert J. Hibbs at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4, at the base of the Hibbs Memorial between the West Gym and Rod Library.

The ceremony marks the 36th anniversary of Hibbs’ death, and recognizes him for receiving the Medal of Honor. Hibbs was a member of the UNI class of 1964 and was killed in action during the Vietnam War. The Hibbs Memorial flag will remain at half-staff for 24 hours following the ceremony. The public may attend.
