CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -The feminist author of two controversial books, Susan Faludi, will speak at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 5, in the Maucker Union Expansion at the University of Northern Iowa. Her address will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Faludi is best known for her 1991 book, "Backlash: The Undeclared War on American Women," which asserts that women are under cultural attack for the civil, legal and political gains made during the '60s and '70s. She is a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and contributing editor to Newsweek.
In her latest book, "Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man," Faludi suggests that even in the world they supposedly own and run, men are at the mercy of cultural forces that disfigure their lives and destroy their chances at happiness. According to Faludi, as traditional masculinity continues to collapse, the once-valued male attributes of craft, loyalty, and social utility are no longer honored, much less rewarded.
Free and open to the public, the lecture is sponsored by UNI's Center for Multicultural Education (CME), the Women's Studies program, and the Textile and Apparel Association. For more information, call the CME, (319) 273-2250.
