The University of Northern Iowa Forensics Program to host Japanese National Debate Team

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa Forensics Program will host the Japanese National Debate Team from March 4-7, with a public debate scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, March 6, in the Seerley Hall Great Reading Room.

Masako Suzuki, a junior at Keio University, and Tfuyoshi Yamazaki, a junior from the University of Tokyo, will represent the Japan National Debate Team during its tour of U.S. colleges and universities. Other stops include institutions on both the East and West Coasts, as well as in the Southwest.

Representing UNI will be Melissa Peterson, a junior general communications major from Iowa City, and Jacob Witt, a graduate student in communications from Elma, Wash. Catherine Palczewski, UNI associate professor of communication studies, is the UNI debate coach.

The debate topic will be: “Resolved: Cedar Falls and Waterloo should adopt an ordinance to penalize hate speech.” The debate will follow an audience-centered debate format, where the first pair of debaters set-up their stance. The second pair of competitors present rebuttals. At the end of the debate, audience members will have a chance to ask questions of both teams.

Performance artist Rachel Rosenthal to lecture at the University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Los Angeles-area performance artist Rachel Rosenthal will present a lecture on her provocative work at the University of Northern Iowa's Kamerick Art Building (KAB), room 111, March 9 at 8 p.m.

Rosenthal is known as an interdisciplinary artist who has developed a revolutionary technique that integrates text, movement, voice, choreography, improvisation, inventive costuming, dramatic lighting and wildly imaginative sets into an unforgettable theatrical experience.

As an animal rights activist, Rosenthal's work centers around the issue of humanity's place on the planet. During the past 20 years, she has presented more than 35 full-scale pieces nationally and internationally. She is the recipient of four grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and awards from the Getty Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the California Arts Council.
