Holocaust survivor to recount experiences at public lecture Wednesday, March 1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The book, “Because of Romek: A holocaust survivor's remembrances,” will be the topic for a history lecture at the University of Northern Iowa, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 1. Author David Faber will deliver the lecture in Seerley Hall Room 115. His address is free and open to the public.

The lecture, based on Faber's experiences, is “a survivor's account of eight different Nazi death camps during World War II,” according to John Johnson, professor and head of UNI's history department. “He was a young Polish-Jew when the Nazis were exterminating the Jews. By luck and his own effort, he survived the camps.”

Johnson said the book is named after Faber's brother, Romek. “David Faber was actually a witness to the murder of his brother and some of his sisters. He saw the worst of humanity. When he was freed from the camp, he was 18 years old, and only weighed 72 pounds.”

Faber has lectured widely to university and public audiences in the United States. He will be bringing photos to the lecture, and copies of his book will be available for purchase. Johnson believes students should attend this lecture because “we're going into a new century. The holocaust was part of our history and should never happen again.”

Applications now being accepted for Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership to be offered to University of Northern Iowa students

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Applications are now being accepted at the University of Northern Iowa for the Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership. The $1,000 scholarship recognizes students for their leadership contributions and potential to model leadership for women.

Applications are available at the Financial Aid Office, Maucker Union Information Desk, Office of Student Activities in Maucker Union, and the Office of the Vice President for Educational and Student Services. They may also be accessed online at <www.uni.edu/finaid/scholarships/htm>. Completed applications must be returned to the Vice President's Office, 103 Student Services Center, no later than 4 p.m., Friday, March 24. The scholarship will be awarded April 9, during the Grace Ann Hovet Leadership Awards Program to be held in the Maucker Union Expansion.

Applicants should show evidence of leadership potential through their awareness of social issues, including those affecting women; their desire to make a difference; demonstrated commitment to serving others; and ethical behavior. They must be undergraduate students who have completed at least their freshman year at UNI, and be returning for the 2000 fall semester. A cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher is required.

Sue Follon served as UNI's vice president for educational and student services from 1985 until her death from lung cancer in 1998. She was the first woman to be named a vice president at UNI. Follon's leadership style was built on helping others develop their own gifts and “soar” in their own rights, according to Clark Elmer, director of enrollment management and admissions at UNI.

“Never one to seek the limelight herself, she concentrated on empowering others,” said Elmer. “She was known for her listening skills, her attention to the individual, and her commitment to community. Students and their development were her central focus, and she was a strong advocate for programs and policies that promoted this. She delighted in her interactions with students and called many by name.”

Individuals who wish to contribute to the endowment to provide scholarships in future years may send contributions to the UNI Foundation, 205 Commons, UNI, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614-0282, designated for the Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership.

For more information, contact Joyce Morrow, assistant director/scholarships in the UNI Financial Aid Office, (319) 273-2701, or check the scholarship Web site at <www.uni.edu/finaid/scholarship.htm>.
