Malcolm Price Laboratory School to partner with Cedar Falls Schools for grades 10-12

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Malcolm Price Laboratory School (MPLS), a unit of the University of Northern Iowa College of Education, has announced that the UNI College of Education is in the process of forming a Professional Development School partnership with the Cedar Falls and Waterloo schools.

Part of the planning will include developing a Distributed Laboratory School concept. It will include an Early Childhood School; a campus-based N-9 Laboratory School; and a Professional Development relationship with the Cedar Falls and Waterloo school districts.

"Under a Professional Development School model, UNI faculty and teachers from Cedar Falls and Waterloo would collaborate on how to best improve teaching and learning; curriculum development; and field experiences for UNI teacher education students. This also will give UNI teacher education students broader field experience," said Thomas Switzer, dean of the UNI College of Education.

With that in mind, planning will soon begin to shift the instruction of MPLS grades 10-12 to Cedar Falls, and other area schools, beginning with the 2003-04 school year.

Switzer explained that new demands are being placed on teacher education programs at the same time that the State of Iowa is facing difficult economic times. "The willingness of our local districts to partner with UNI's nationally prominent teacher preparation program creates a timely opportunity for positive change. Under this arrangement, our present faculty will be able to better carry out the lab school mission, and UNI will enhance its ability to educate the best teachers in Iowa."

UNI President, Robert Koob, said "I am grateful that the local educational community has stepped forward to ensure we continue to provide the best possible teaching environment for our kids. The success of this partnership will mean that UNI can continue to provide the highest quality teachers for all grades for all of Iowa."

UNI celebrates National Fitness Day, Black History Month

The Wellness and Recreation Service's staff at UNI will host National Recreational Sport and Fitness Day at the Wellness and Recreation Center Friday, Feb. 22. On Feb. 22, 1950, 20 African-American intramural directors from 11 historically black colleges met at Dillard University in New Orleans to form the National Intramural Association. The organization became the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association in 1975.

At UNI, the day will include a poker walk/run at noon, a variety of recreational activities in the gymnasium and displays in the main corridor from 1 to 4 p.m., and the world’s largest aerobics class in the gymnasium at 4 p.m.

"The idea is to celebrate our heritage and educate participants by showing them the bond that

exists between our everyday leisure activities and the 20 African-American men and women who laid the foundation for the great recreational opportunities available on campuses today, " said Jim Langel, associate director of facilities and operations at UNI's Wellness and Recreation Center.

'Effects of Age on Understanding Accented Speech' topic for UNI Language and Science Group's spring colloquium

"Effects of Age on Understanding Accented Speech" will be the first installment of the UNI Language and Science Group's Spring Colloquium, from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, in the Communication Arts Center, Room 263. Angela Burda, UNI assistant professor of communicative disorders, will address the topic.

Burda says there are two major changes occurring within the United States population. "Not only is the nation becoming increasingly multicultural, but also the number of older individuals is rising dramatically. Older individuals may find themselves communicating with non-native English speakers who have accented speech." She says that there's little empirical data regarding this topic. She will present an overview of research and pertinent issues, along with the results from a recent study investigating this topic.

An informal discussion will precede the program, at 12:30 p.m.
