'Riel' film to be the third in Inter-American series at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- 'Riel,' the third film in the University of Northern Iowa Inter-American Studies Committee series titled "Human Rights in the Americas – II," will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Room 102 Sabin Hall. It is free and open to the public.

'Riel,' shot in Canada in 1978, tells the story of 24-year-old Louis Riel, mystic visionary and leader of the Metis Indians, who challenged Canada's redcoats in the people's fight for equality and freedom of rule. It stars Christopher Plummer as Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald, and Raymond Cloutier as Riel.

"The movie takes place in 1868, and is a fascinating journey over the sweeping Western plains to the private chambers of high-powered Eastern politicians who negotiated the dimensions of what is now Canada," said Michael Millar, chair of UNI's Inter-American Studies Committee. "More than 100 years after his execution, Louis Riel remains one of the most controversial figures in Canada's history."
