UNI film series provides a different perspective on the Holocaust
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "A Day in a Warsaw Ghetto," the next film in the University of Northern Iowa's "Reel to Real" film series, will be presented at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the University Room North in Maucker Union.
The film uncovers photos taken by Wehrmacht Sergeant Heinz Joest, a German soldier during the holocaust. The photo images help unmask the spirit of the ghetto as Jack Kuper, the filmmaker and holocaust survivor, presents a portrayal of humanity in a nightmare situation.
A discussion following the 30-minute film will be facilitated by Guy Sims, associate director/student activities, Maucker Union.
Sims said the "Reel to Real" film series presents short films worthy of reflection, discussion and criticism, presented in a setting that is both comfortable and conducive for conversation. "Reel to Real" is sponsored by Maucker Union Student Activities Office. The series will continue on March 27, with "Didn't We Ramble On: The Black Marching Band".

UNI to host Physics Olympics regional competition, Wednesday, Feb. 20
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Department of Physics will host the UNI/Area Education Agency 7 Physics Olympics Regional Competition in the UNI-Dome, from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Approximately 250 high school and middle school/junior high students within a 50-mile radius of Cedar Falls will participate. High schools competing are Cedar Falls, Waterloo East and West, Dike-New Hartford, Jesup, North Tama (Traer), Don Bosco (Gilbertville), Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Dunkerton, Nashua-Plainfield, Union (La Porte City), East Buchanan (Winthrop), Wapsie Valley (Fairbank), Janesville and Sumner.
According to Larry Escalada, UNI assistant professor of physics and science education, and the event coordinator, UNI has hosted the regional Physics Olympics since the early 1970s. He said teams will put their understanding of physics principles to the test by competing in five events: self-propelled catapult, mouse-trap car, toothpick bridge building, soda straw arm and water heater.
Students will work in teams designing and building their devices. In order to win an event, the "cars" must be able to: carry and launch a ping-pong ball the furthest distance; travel a certain distance in the shortest period of time; support the largest applied force; support a given mass from the longest soda straw arm; and facilitate the largest temperature increase for a given volume of water.
The two school teams with the highest and second highest total scores from all five events will qualify for the state competition to be held at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, April 10. In addition, event team winners that are from non-team winning schools also will be invited to the state competition.
For more information, contact Larry Escalada, (319) 273-2431.
