CEDAR FALLS, Iowa In honor of Black History Month, three community poets will give a poetry performance in Les Femmes Dujour - The Women of Today. The performance, part of the monthly Difficult Dialogues series at the University of Northern Iowa, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Hemisphere Lounge of the Maucker Union.
Lawanda Diva Brown, Cherie Chillin Martin and Tyra Poet-T Nelson, will perform a combination of original work and poetry by African American poets like Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni. Victoria DeFrancisco, associate professor of communication studies, says that Les Femmes Dujour addresses contemporary social issues from multiple perspectives through recitation, song and body movement.
Difficult Dialogues is an ongoing discussion on the ways in which racism detours women's coalition building, DeFrancisco says. The event is sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Education, the Office of the Vice President for Educational and Student Services, UNI Multicultural Activities and Programs and the Women's Studies program.
For more information, call DeFrancisco at (319) 273-7219 or Cathy Pearson at (319) 273-2115.

CEDAR FALLS, IowaEducators from around the world will gather at the University of Northern Iowa Overseas Recruiting Fair in the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 25-27.
The fair began in 1976 as a small gathering of 15 international schools and 100 teaching candidates. It is the oldest recruiting events of its kind in the country. The idea for the fair came about after one Pakistani headmaster shared, with a UNI placement officer, his frustration of having to travel from one school to another to interview teaching candidates. The UNI Office of Placement and Career Counseling decided to centralize the effort for international schools and the first fair was held.
The Overseas Recruiting Fair has grown every year since, tripling its size within five years, according to Tracey Roling, UNI assistant director of educational placement. Last year, 131 international schools representing 65 countries were in attendance and 680 candidates from 45 states participated in the event.
A special seminar, moderated by international educator Burton Fox, will be held Friday, Feb. 25, 9:30-10:45 a.m., in Sullivan Room 23. Fox will preside over a panel presentation on Assignment Overseas. He has served at many levels of education and as a consultant around the world.
UNI current year graduates may participate in the fair at a reduced rate. In order to be eligible for registration at this rate, applicants must graduate from UNI in Dec. 1999, May 2000 or July 2000; receive teacher certification for the first time in Dec. 1999, May 2000 or July 2000; furnish a copy of certification or UNI Registrar Verification for Project Completion of State-Approved Teacher Education Program; be registered with UNI Education Placement; complete all Overseas Placement registration paperwork; and demonstrate a willingness to sign a two-year contract.
The event is sponsored by the UNI Office of Placement and Career Services. For more information or registration, contact Roling at (319) 273-2083 or at the office's Website, www.uni.edu/placement/overseas
