UNI custodial staff prepares edible Valentines for 500 residence hall students

Each year, the custodial staff of UNI's Dancer Hall hosts a festive Valentine's Day celebration for the students in that residence hall. Staff members bake 400 to 500 cookies each, and decorate the area on the ground floor near the main entrance of the hall.

Ruth Heber, lead custodian in Dancer, says it used to be a Christmas celebration for the students, but changed three years ago when the staff realized students were too busy with finals and holiday rituals to really enjoy the staff's efforts. "We chose Valentine's Day because a lot of the students don't get anything special on that holiday, and they may feel a little neglected. We try to make them feel more wanted, and let them know that we appreciate them as much as they appreciate us."

The five custodians in Dancer begin baking and freezing cookies, candies and bars right after the December holidays, to provide ample refreshments for the 500-plus residents of the hall.

The event will be Thursday, Feb. 14, beginning at 7 a.m., in Dancer Hall.

'Peace-Making for Leaders' topic for Thursday, Feb. 14, leadership series workshop at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "Peace-making for Leaders," will be the topic for a workshop in the University of Northern Iowa's Leaders on Leadership Series, at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14. The workshop will run until 4:45 p.m., in the Schindler Education Center, Room 244-245.

Led by Greg Buntz, executive director of the Iowa Peace Institute, the workshop will explore how the wise leader creates an atmosphere that keeps unproductive conflict to a minimum, while empowering followers to talk things out rather than resorting to conflict. The workshop is free and open to the public, but those interested in attending are asked to call the Leadership Studies Office at (319) 273-6898, to ensure an adequate number of handouts are available at the event.

The purpose of this series is to provide an opportunity to learn about the leadership views and practices of leader from across a variety of sectors of society, according to Gerri Perreault, director of the Leadership Studies Program, sponsor of the series.

The next program in the series will feature a panel discussion on government issues, Thursday, Feb. 21.

For more information or to confirm attendance to the workshop, contact the Leadership Studies Program at (319) 273-6898.
