Acclaimed mezzo soprano Ruby Hinds to perform at UNI's fourth annual Black History Month Concert
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Ruby Hinds, internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano, will perform "See There in the Distance," for the University of Northern Iowa's fourth annual Black History Month Concert at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center's Great Hall.
"See There in the Distance," a one-woman multi-media show, illustrates the life and accomplishments of legendary contralto Marian Anderson, and features renowned pianist, David Holkeboer. The event is being presented by the University of Northern Iowa School of Music, in conjunction with its George Walker Society of Music. The performance is open to the public free of charge.
"Ruby Hinds is a consummate artist," says Darryl Taylor, UNI associate professor of music. "Her international appearances have been with the very best of the musical world, in the best halls, and with the best conductors.
"It is a rare treat for our UNI community to be blessed with her presentation on the life of Marian Anderson. Anderson broke down color barriers that were seemingly insurmountable in her time. It is fitting that Ms. Hinds would pay homage to this great pioneer, and that we would present it as the School of Music offering for Black History Month."
Funding for the concert is from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, along with the Martha-Ellen Tye Visiting Artists Fund and the UNI Center for Multicultural Education.
For more information on the performance, contact Darryl Taylor at (319) 273-5879.
