Iowa space group announces awards

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC), a NASA-supported group that includes the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and Drake University, recently awarded 11 $10,000 seed grants and four $30,000 cooperative grants for research projects.

Both types of grants were awarded for an eleven-month period that began Feb. 1, and will be used for research relevant to NASA's mission, according to William J. Byrd, ISGC director. One of the consortium's main goals is to stimulate aerospace research.

The $10,000 seed grants are awarded to faculty at the consortium's member universities. At least half of each grant must be used as scholarship money to support one or more students, who will work closely with the faculty researcher.

The consortium's other affiliates include aerospace and technology businesses, state government agencies, science museums and aerospace associations. At least $10,000 of each grant must be used to support student research assistants.
