UNI School of Music to host U.S. Navy Band concert

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa School of Music will sponsor a concert by the U.S. Navy Band Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

The U.S. Navy Band, a frequent performer at White House and Pentagon ceremonies, will play a variety of selections including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "God Bless America." Among the band members will be trombone player Chief Petty Officer Mike Schmitz, a Dyersville native and UNI alumnus.

Since its official designation in 1925, the U.S. Navy Band has become a diverse organization comprised of 163 enlisted musicians and three officers. Based at the historic Washington (D.C.) Navy Yard, the organization features a concert-ceremonial unit and four distinct specialty groups: the Sea Chanters chorus, the Commodores jazz ensemble, the Country Current country-bluegrass group, and the Cruisers rock ensemble. The band also features several chamber music groups.

Tickets for the concert are free and will be available beginning Feb. 11 by calling the GBPAC at (319) 273-SHOW or toll-free, 1-877-549-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all UNI ticket outlets. Doors will open at 1 p.m. for ticket holders, who must be in their seats by 1:45 p.m. At that time, the doors will be opened to non-ticket holders. Admission is subject to availability.
