The University of Northern Iowa Chinese Students and Scholars Friendship Association celebrate the Chinese New Year

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Spring Festival, commonly known as the Chinese New Year, will be celebrated with a potluck party hosted by the University of Northern Iowa Chinese Students and Scholars Friendship Association (CSSFA) on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Trinity Wesleyan Church, 125 Orchard Dr., Cedar Falls, 6-9 p.m. The celebration will include a variety of Chinese songs and games presented by students and local Chinese families.

The Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) calendar, so the date of the holiday varies from late January to early February. According to the China Institute in America, the Chinese people have been celebrating this festival for thousands of years. The festival celebrates the earth coming back to life, and the start of plowing and sowing.

The year 2000 represents the year of the Dragon. Traditionally, people spend time visiting neighbors, family and friends during the holiday. The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is known as Lantern Festival which signals the end of the New Year festival period.

Persons interested in attending or needing more information, may contact Jason Lau, CSSFA president, at (319) 273-5843 or lauw9548@uni.edu.
