CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Area high school and middle school students can attend free tutoring sessions at the University of Northern Iowa Educational Talent Search (ETS)/Upward Bound offices in Waterloo.
Tutoring assistance is available for math, science and English on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the UNI Center for Urban Education (UNI-CUE), 715 E. 4th St., Waterloo. The sessions began Jan. 19, and will run each Wednesday through May 17.
The tutoring session is held on a drop-in basis, but students are responsible for bringing books or other schoolwork and supplies necessary for tutoring. Tutoring is cancelled when school is cancelled.

Momma's Boy: Feminist Mothering and Masculinity topic for C.R.O.W. Forum lecture Monday, Feb. 7 at University of Northern Iowa
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Momma's Boy: Feminist Mothering and Masculinity will be the topic of an address at noon, Monday, Feb. 7, in the Embassy Room of the University of Northern Iowa's Maucker Union.
Catherine MacGillivray, UNI associate professor of English, will present her first address at the C.R.O.W. (Current Research on Women) Forum, sponsored by UNI's Graduate Program in Women's Studies. It is open to the public free of charge.
MacGillivray will speak on the advantages of feminist mothering on constructions of masculinity. I will be discussing how a feminist mother might incorporate feminism into her mothering practices, she said.
MacGillivray is in her fourth year at UNI. Her research interests include French feminisms, translations, feminist mothering and masculinity. She is the co-editor of the just published Straight with a Twist: Queer Theory and the Subject of Heterosexuality. She is currently carrying out research to support another book, Momma's Boy: Constructing Masculinities, Constructing Motherhood.
The next program on the C.R.O.W. Forum series will be March. 6, when Sonia Yetter, UNI associate professor of modern languages, will present A Woman of the '60s: The Life and Thought of A.P. Filosofova.

CEDAR FALLS, IowaStudents at the University of Northern Iowa were recently awarded a variety of scholarships from the Department of Mathematics. The recipients were chosen based on academic performance and promise.
Recipients of two $750 Alumni Scholarships are Julie Binneboese of Orange City, who is a junior mathematics teaching major, and Kamilla Guseynova, Van Meter, a senior mathematics and computer science major who is minoring in French. Binneboese is the daughter of Don and Joyce Binneboese and a 1997 graduate of MOC-Floyd Valley High School. Guseynova is a 1996 graduate of Van Meter Junior-Senior High School.
Recipients of the $500 Alumni Scholarship are: Gary Spieler, Sioux City, a senior mathematics and computer science major, and Lee Hakert, Strawberry Point, a junior mathematics: statistical and actuarial science and general finance major. Spieler is the son of Lyle and Donna Spieler, 2511 S. Coral St., Sioux City. He is a 1995 graduate of East High School. Hakert is the son of Marlen and Deb Hakert, and a 1997 graduate of Starmont High School.
Amy Lustik, Burnsville, Minn., an elementary education major with minors in kindergarten-sixth grade mathematics and educational technology, received the Sorenson Elementary Mathematics Scholarship of $1,500. She is the daughter of Ken and Martha Lustik, 1833 Southcross Dr., Burnsville, Minn. She is a 1996 graduate of Burnsville Senior High School.
Teresa Grothus, Bettendorf, a junior mathematics teaching major, was the recipient of the Carl and Wanda Wehner Mathematics and Computer Science Teaching Scholarship. The recipient of this award is expected to teach in Iowa after receiving his or her degree. She is the daughter of Bill and Celie Grothus, 2916 Maplecrest, Bettendorf. She is a 1997 graduate of Pleasant Valley Community High School.
Heather Broek, Orange City, a senior mathematics: statistics and actuarial science major, was
the recipient of the John F. and Ruth Cross Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in statistics and actuarial science who is participating in an internship. She is the daughter of Harley and Cindy Broek, Orange City. She is a 1997 graduate of MOC-Floyd Valley High School.
