CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Human Rights in the Americas is the theme for a month-long film series being presented on the University of Northern Iowa campus during February. Five films portraying human rights issues in the United States of America, Canada and Argentina, will be shown from Tuesday, Feb.1 to Tuesday, Feb.29, at 7.30 p.m.
Four films will be shown on Tuesdays, in Seerley Hall Room 115, while the fifth film, The Panama Deception, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 24, will be shown in Sabin Hall, Room 102.
The series will begin Tuesday, Feb. 1, with Romero, starring Raul Julia. This is the story of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, who fought social injustice and oppression in his country. On Feb. 8, a documentary, Kanesatake, will show the aboriginal struggle in Canada, while the Feb. 15 offering, the first volume of Eyes on the Prize, shows the extraordinary role played by ordinary people in the fight for civil and human rights in the United States.
The Panama Deception , the Thursday, Feb. 24 offering, is the true story of the U.S's invasion of Panama. The series closes Tuesday, Feb. 29, with a film that won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Official Story. This film details the fall of an affluent Argentinean family. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
The film series is sponsored by the Inter-American Studies Committee. All showings are free and open to the public.
