Jay Edelnant, Professor of Performance Studies/Acting Head, Department of Theatre, (319) 273-6386
Vicki Grimes, Office of Public Relations, (319) 273-2761
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Jay Edelnant, professor of performance studies and acting head of the theatre department at the University of Northern Iowa, is serving a three-year term as national chair of the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival (ACTF).
Edelnant's term began in August and runs through the summer of 2002. As part of his responsibilities, he is currently traveling to a series of regional theatre festivals as one of a select panel of national judges. The panel will choose five or six productions to be presented at the National Festival, held each year in April, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
ACTF, in its 32nd season, is the oldest arts education program at the Kennedy Center, actually predating the development of the center itself, according to Edelnant. It is a combined effort of the Department of Education and a grass roots organization of hundreds of college and university theatre programs, from community colleges, small liberal arts schools, conservatories, and historically black universities, to the biggest graduate training institutions in the country.
It is the NCAA of college theatre and the invitation to bring a production to the Kennedy Center in April is the theater's equivalent of a trip to the Final Four or the Rose Bowl, said Edelnant.
Over 900 productions were entered in this year's festival from schools all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Guam. These productions were seen either on their home campus or at a state festival, with eight to ten chosen to go to a regional festival in January or February.
This year's festivals are at universities and professional theatres in Milwaukee; Clarion, Pa.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Manchester, N.H.; Greensboro, N.C.; Las Vegas; and Tyler, Texas.
In addition to the plays, Edelnant said the Festival sponsors thousands of dollars in awards donated by theatrical businesses and professional and philanthropic institutions for young actors, playwrights and designers. The competition for these awards occurs as part of the regional and national festivals.
The National Chair is the elected executive officer of the colleges and universities who participate in the Festival. In addition to working closely with the program's managers at the Kennedy Center, attending the regional festivals and moderating the national selection process, the chair represents the Festival to its constituents and potential sponsors. He or she also attends gatherings of national and international theatre and arts education organizations, presides over the Irene Ryan Evening of Scenes at the Kennedy Center in April, and chairs the formal meetings of the organization in April and August.
Edelnant has been affiliated with KC/ACTF since 1982, when he became director of theatre UNI and was nominated for regional office. Since then he has served as a regional chair (Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, North & South Dakota, and Colorado), chair of the regional chairs, a member of the national selection team for the 25th Anniversary Festival, member-at-large, and national vice chair.
For more information on the Kennedy Center and ACTF, contact the Kennedy Center Web site: kennedy-center.org/education/actf/ or Edelnant at (319) 273-6386.
