CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Poet Jonathan Stull will be the next presenter in the University of Northern Iowa Reading Series, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19. The reading will be in the Thompson Commons (Baker Hall 161) on the UNI campus and is free and open to the public.
This reading celebrates Stull's recent book of poems, "Singing the Lake's Desire," according to Vince Gotera, UNI associate professor of English and the coordinator of UNI's Creative Writing Program. Poems in this collection have appeared in such journals as Parnassus Literary Review, Kansas Quarterly, and the Briar Cliff Review. His poems have also been published widely in such literary magazines as 100 Words, Wascana Review, and Artworld Quarterly.
Stull was honored by inclusion in the 1996 landmark anthology "Voices on the Landscape: Contemporary Iowa Poets". He is now working on a new collection of poems called "Sanctuary."
"It's a genuine honor for us to be able to celebrate the publication of Jon Stull's new book with a poetry reading. Who says a prophet is never acknowledged in his hometown?"
Stull has taught English at East High School in Waterloo for over two decades. He is currently teaching Beginning Poetry Writing at UNI. He has also taught at Upper Iowa University and at the University of Iowa's "Iowa Summer Writing Festival."
Stull earned his B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University and his M.F.A. degree from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. He has taught creative writing not only at UNI but also at Upper Iowa University and the University of Iowa.

CEDAR FALLS, IowaStudents, faculty and staff will have the chance to put their convictions and interests into action at the University of Northern Iowa Volunteer Fair and Martin Luther King, Jr., observance, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in Maucker Union Expansion.
Every semester, the Volunteers are Important People (V.I.P.) Volunteer Fair provides an opportunity for students to learn about community service, as well as match their interests and career goals with a variety of volunteer experiences. This semester over 42 agencies will be represented at the fair, the largest number of organizations ever to attend. This boost in interest is seen as a valuable resource by Laura Praglin, UNI career development coordinator.
We see volunteering as an integral part of career services, said Praglin. Students learn what they're good at and may find out how they want to contribute to the world.
Then from 2:30 to 3 p.m., the Waterloo East High School Expressions chorus group will perform. Afterwards, at 3 p.m., Mary Sawyer, a professor at Iowa State University and the author of Black Ecumenism: Implementing the Demands of Justice, will present Living Lives of Service: Lessons from Martin Luther King, Jr.
These events are sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Education and the UNI Placement and Career Services office. For more information, contact Praglin, UNI career development coordinator, at (319) 273-7331, or Angie Grimstad, Project V.I.P. coordinator, at (319) 273-7748.
