Continued caucus research by University of Northern Iowa faculty members sheds light on upcoming elections

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Two professors at the University of Northern Iowa are continuing an Iowa Precinct Caucus Survey Project that focuses on who attends the Iowa precinct caucuses, how active party members are in electioneering and the role of political parties in nominating candidates. This year's caucuses, a first-in-the-nation Presidential event, will be held Monday, Jan. 24, one week before the New Hampshire primary.

Allen Brierly, UNI associate professor of political science, and Jon Hall, UNI associate professor of communication studies, are conducting the survey that traces its roots to 1976, and has been conducted in its present form at UNI since 1988. A questionnaire has been included in the precinct kits for both Republican and Democratic party meeting chairs for all 2,200 precincts in the State of Iowa. They will be distributed in a random system, designed to get a representative sample from among the 4,400 meeting sites for Caucus 2000.

Brierly has expanded the results from previous surveys to include their findings to date. They can be found at www.uni.edu/iowacaucus/main.htm. Completed surveys from 1988-1998 show that slightly more men than women participate in precinct caucuses, however there is a more proportionate attendance between men and women at the Democratic Party meetings; incomes increased for attendees in both Democratic and Republican meetings; typical caucus attendants are 35-65 years old; and the average number of years of school that were completed was 14.4 years— high school plus over two years of college or university, or other postsecondary education.

Their study also found that the Democratic Party caucus had some moderates and conservatives in attendance and the Republican Party attendees were found to have few liberals and moderates. Overall, Brierly and Hall observed that the percentages between 1988 and 1998 were almost constant in their beliefs, although the Republican electorate has become slightly more conservative between 1990 and 1998.

For more information on their findings, contact Brierly at (319) 273-6194, or E-mail him at allen.brierly@uni.edu; or Hall at (319) 273-7159, or E-mail jon.hall@uni.edu.
