Dave Hoing, Rod Library, sold his short story "The Healer" to the British magazine Interzone. Hoing had his short story "The Window" published in the British magazine Black Static.

Richard Utz, English Language & Literature, published: "Philosophy," in Chaucer: An Oxford Guide, ed. Steve Ellis (Oxford: Oxford UP, 2005), 158-73, and "'Mes souvenirs sont peut-Ítre reconstruits': Medieval Studies, Medievalism, and the Scholarly and Popular Memories of the 'Right of the Lord's First Night'," in
Philologie im Netz 31 (2005), 49-59. He is also co-editor (with Jesse Swan) of Postmodern Medievalisms (Cambridge: Boydell & Brewer, 2005), and of Speculum Sermonis: Interdisciplinary Reflections on the Medieval Sermon (with Georgiana Donavin and Cary Nederman (Turnhout: Brepols, 2005).

 

 

Kenneth Atkinson, Philosophy & Religion, presented a paper, "Josephus's Portrayals of the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes in Light of Qumran Texts and Pseudepigrapha," at the national meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature in Philadelphia, in November. Respondent to the paper was classicist Erich Gruen, University of California at Berkeley. Following the respondent, Atkinson defended the paper for 45 minutes before an international panel of experts and the audience.

Roger Kueter, director, Community College Projects, presented for the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) Web conference, “Connecting the Teacher Pipeline: Effective Collaborations Between Community College and Four-year Institutions,” on Oct. 27. Kueter’s presentation was titled, "2+2: Bridging the Gap Between Community Colleges and Universities."

Randal Hayes, ITS Voice Services, presented "Legislative/Regulatory Bootcamp & Update" at the MiCTA Communications Technology Spring Conference at the Soaring Eagle Resort in Midland, Mich.

 

Brenda Bass, Department of Design, Textiles, Gerontology and Family Studies, was recently notified by the Center for Families at Purdue University and the Boston College Center for Work and Family, that an article she co-authored with Joe Grzywacz (formerly of HPELS), was identified as one of the top 20 papers considered for the annual Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research. A committee of 44 leading scholars from eight countries reviewed some 2,000 articles published in 52 leading English-language journals from North America and Europe for the award selection.

Kim Miller, Price Lab School, won the Helping Hands Award from the State Learning Disabilities Association. 

The PLS/Northern University High School Choir has been selected to sing at Washington National Cathedral Sunday, May 28. The choir, under the direction of Linda Sharp, Teaching and PLS/NU Secondary Vocal Music, will sing a
half-hour prelude to the service on that Sunday. Sharp was selected to play a solo organ recital at Washington National Cathedral on Aug. 20. Sharp was named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers, her fifth selection for this honor.

Josef DeWitz, Counseling Center, has earned his Psychology License from the State of Iowa.

Donna Thompson, Health, Physical Education & Leisure Services, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. She received her bachelor's degree from Western Washington University in 1961. Thompson is one of only 20 people to ever receive the award from among the university's 90,000 graduates.

Paul Gray, Computer Science, was an adviser on the development of Little Fe, a portable computational cluster for educational use.  Last month, the Krell Institute awarded Little Fe an honorable mention in its Undergraduate Computational Engineering and Sciences Award Program, for the enhancement of undergraduate education in computational engineering and science.

Eugene Wallingford, head of the Department of Computer Science, has been named to the Iowa Department of Economic Development’s Information Technology Council, which advises Governor Vilsack on economic development related to information technology. 

Randal Hayes, Information Technology Services-Network Services, has been elected to the Association for Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education (ACUTA) board of directors. ACUTA is an international, non-profit educational association that supports the optimal use of communications technologies in higher education institutions. ACUTA represents nearly 2,000 people at 825
institutions in all 50 states, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For the past five years, Hayes has served as the ACUTA Legislative/Regulatory Committee chair.

Jill Uhlenberg, director of the UNI Child Development Center, was
selected as NCCCC's (National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers) 2005
Director of the Year.

Jenni Colsch, Continuing Education, received a silver Addy award for the National Coalition of Campus Children's Centers Annual Conference Campaign.
