Jennifer Cooley, Modern Languages, wrote an article, "La Sombra Fugitiva: Sor Juana y un modelo femenino del saber humano," published in Revista Mujer Cotemporanea, Mexico City, Mexico. Feb.-Apr 2002. The article was based on a paper presented at a conference in Mexico City in November 2001. Samuel Lyndon Gladden, English, wrote an article entitled, "Warhols Frankenstein; or Mary Shelleys Novel Comes Out." The article was accepted for the "Dialogues of Film and Literature" special issue of Interdisciplinary Humanities. John Burtis, Communication Studies, has recently published two articles, "Myth and Leadership Vision: Rhetorical Manifestations of Cultural Force," Journal of Leadership Studies, 7, and "Communications and Experiential Education," Journal of Arts and Sciences in Career and Experiential Education, 1. Samuel Lyndon Gladden, English, has published a book entitled, "Shelleys Textual Seductions: Plotting Utopia in the Erotic and Political Works" (Routledge 2002). Dr. Kimberly Vess Darst, Counseling, published two chapters in the newly-released book "Group Work Experts Share Their Favorite Activities: A Guide to Choosing, Planning, Conducting and Processing." |

Dean Kruckeberg, Communication Studies, served as a guest speaker discussing, "Public Relations Ethics" at a luncheon, for the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America on Feb. 12, in Kansas City, MO. He was also interviewed about public relations ethics by graduate student and professor via teleconference from Central Missouri State University, on Feb. 4. The interview was part of the professors effort to interview major figures in public relations scholarship. Samuel Lyndon Gladden, English, will deliver a paper entitled, "Dishevelings: Comings-Undone and the Maintenance of Social Order," at the 2002 British Women Writers Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, in April. Christine Streed, Art, is currently exhibiting a painting in the Generation III exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery in New York City. The documentation of her painting will be entered into the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution New York Center. Jeff Byrd, Art, attended the College of Art Associations National Conference in Philadelphia on Feb. 21. He served as a panelist in the discussion titled, "Post Queer?: Gender, Sexuality and the Subversion of Legibility." William Clohesy, Philosophy and Religion, presented a paper, "Altruism and Power: Public Action in Civil Society," at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in Cincinnati, on March 2. Dean Kruckeberg, Communication Studies, was the moderator for top competitive papers at the 5th Annual International, Interdisciplinary Public Relations Research Conference of the Public Relations Society of America Educators Academy, Mar. 9, 2002, in Miami, Fla. Martha Reineke and Betty DeBerg, Philosophy and Religion, were both invited speakers at the recent annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges and Universities. Reineke led a seminar, "Religious Literacy in a Globally Interdependent World," and DeBerg gave a presentation, "Religion, Spirituality, and Religious Studies on Campus." Jeffery Byrd, Art, was a visiting artist at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis where he lectured and taught a workshop. He also presented a new performance work at the Full Nelson Festival in Los Angeles. The festival was held at the Palace Theatre, the same theatre used by Harry Houdini. Drs. Ann Vernon, Duane Halbur and Kimberly Vess Darst presented "Beginning, Middle, and End: Evaluating Counseling Students' Progress" at the American Counseling Association Conference in New Orleans, LA in March. Dr. Duane Halbur, Dr. Kimberly Vess Darst and Ms. Lana Poppen, Counseling, presented "Perceptions of Effective Counselors: A Q-Methodology Study" at the American Counseling Association conference in New Orleans, LA in March. Linda Walsh, Psychology, was a member of a panel presenting Compelling Demonstrations for the Introductory Psychology Course at the Ninth Midwest Institute on the Teaching of Psychology in Glen Ellyn, IL March 1. |

Mary Bozik, Communication Studies, has been appointed to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Adolescence and Young Adulthood/English Language Arts Standards Committee. Bozik will help develop revised standards for high school language arts teachers seeking national board certification. The standards are used by NBPTS to evaluate teachers from across the country who apply for certification by the Board. The first meeting of the Adolescence and Young Adulthood/English Language Arts Standards Committee was March 22-24 in Arlington, Virginia. Jennifer Cooley, Modern Languages, was invited to join the Editorial Board of Torre de Papel, a scholarly journal on Hispanic literature, linguistics and literary creation located at the University of Iowa. Jazz Band II was named the outstanding College Big Band at the 35th Annual Eau Claire Jazz Festival Friday, Mar. 15. UNI Combos III, II, and I placed first, second, and third, respectively, in the combo division. Jazz Band II and Combo III are directed by Christopher Merz, Assistant Professor of Music. Combo II is coached by Cedar Falls musician and David Aguilar, former UNI student. Combo I is run by its student members. Robert Washut, Music, was the winner of the First Annual Knox College (IL) Jazz Composition Contest. Washut received a cash prize and his piece was performed by the Knox College Jazz Ensemble at the schools annual Rutabega Jazz Festival in March. Chris Ogbondah, Communication Studies, was awarded a national fellowship from the American Press Institute, Reston, Virginia. He was among 11 other journalism educators in the U.S.A. and Canada. The fellowship will include a 10-day summer seminar in Virginia, to be facilitated by editors and media executives from the nations leading papers, including the NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune. |
