Dr. Mingshui Cai, Curriculum and Instruction, recently had an article published in The New Advocate entitled "Reflections on Transactional Theory as a Theoretical Guide for Literacy and Literature Education." Dr. Gloria Kirkland Holmes, Curriculum and Instruction, has a teaching unit for children that is published on the Internet (www.TeacherTimeSavers.com) entitled "Pet Pals." Dr. Joan Gerbo, Curriculum and Instruction, had an article entitled "Alternative assessment: Early childhood education" published in Decembers issue of Iowa ASCD. Karlene Kischer-Browne, adjunct instructor, Communicative Disorders, published an article entitled "Deaf Parents, Hearing Children Face Unique Challenges in Schools" in the November 2000 issue of Silent News. Becky Wilson Hawbaker, Megan Balong, Suzanne Buckwalter and Sue Runyon Price Lab School, had their article "Coplanning: Building a Strong BASE of Support for All Students" accepted for publication in Teaching Exceptional Children. Steven E. Lobell, Political Science, has published two articles, "Britains Paradox: Cooperation or Punishment Prior to World War I." Review of International Studies 27, 2 (April 2001), pp. 169-186; "The Grand Strategy of Hegemonic Decline: Dilemmas of Strategy and Finance." Security Studies 10, 1 (Autumn 2000), pp. 92-119. Samuel Lyndon Gladden, English, published an article entitled "'Sebastian Melmoth': Wilde's Parisian Exile as the Spectacle of Sexual, Textual Revolution" in Victorians Institute Journal 28 (2000): 39-63. |

Barbara ODonnell, Curriculum and Instruction, presented two sessions at the SouthWest Iowa Talented and Gifted Parent/Student Workshop on Nov. 11th in Carson, Iowa. The sessions were entitled "Detecting and Overcoming Underachievement in Gifted Children" and "Current Issues and Trends in Gifted Education." Dr. Deborah Tidwell, Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Andrea De-Bruin-Parecki, Educational Psychology and Foundations, Co-Directors of TEAMS (Teacher Education Addressing Minority-Language Speakers) Project, will present at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) 2001 Conference in Phoenix, Arizona on Feb. 22, 2001. The presentation title is "With the Best Intentions: Attempts to Retain Second Language College Students Navigating Lifes Complexities." Anne Myles, Department of English (assistant professor), presented a paper, "Border Crossing: Quakers and the Queering of New England" at the Modern Language Association convention in Washington, D.C., Dec. 27-30, 2000. Ella Sweigert, Study Abroad Center, was session chair and main presenter at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Region IV Conference "The Climate of International Education: Forecast 2000" in Iowa City, Nov. 15-18. The session was titled "Involving Returning Study Abroad Students in Campus Life: A Case Study". Becky Wilson Hawbaker, Megan Balong and Sue Runyon Price Lab School, presented a demonstration of their co-planning process at the National Middle School Conference in St. Louis on November 3, 2000. The presentation was entitled "The Power of Two: Teachers2 + Collaboration2= Success2" Jim O'Loughlin, English, delivered a paper "_Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Hegemonic Project of 1876," at the Modern Language Association conference in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 30, 2000. Linda Walsh, Psychology, presented "Mini-Cases for Groups: A Variation On Case-Based or Problem-Based Learning for Classes Up to About Fifty" at the 23rd Annual National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology, Jan. 3-6, 2001 in St. Petersburg Beach, FL. Jeffery Byrd, Art Department, recently lectured at a symposium called "Conscious Captives: Inside the Media" held at the Des Moines Art Center. |

James O'Connor, APR, University Marketing and Public Relations, has been elected president of the Cedar Valley Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (CVPRSA). Gayle Pohl, APR, Communication Studies, has been elected national assembly delegate of the Cedar Valley Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (CVPRSA). Dean Kruckeberg, APR, Fellow PRSA, Communication Studies, has been elected to the board of the Public Relations Society of America as a director at large. Jeanne Keyser, Campbell Hall, received the outstanding article of the year for her article, "Lessons I Learned from my Refrigerator Door" in the UMR News. Drake Martin, Residence, received the Outstanding Multicultural Award at the UMR-ACUHO conference for the program he created and facilitated (at UNI) entitled "What Could Christians Do?" Jeanne Keyser, Campbell Hall, was elected to the position of Treasurer for the Upper Midwest Region - Association of College and University Housing Officers. Megan Lipke, Art, had an oil work on canvas selected for an international juried exhibition at The Stage Gallery in Merrick, NY. It is one of only 26 pieces selected from 2009 works of art submitted by 553 artists from around the world. Christopher R. Edginton, School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services, was named the recipient of the 2000 National Literary Award presented by the National Recreation and Park Association. The award was presented in Phoenix, Arizona at NRPAs Annual Congress. The National Literary Award is presented annually to the writer or publisher who has made the most significant contributions to the park and recreation fields understanding of new innovations, refined philosophic thought and tenets, trends and/or research in parks, recreation and conservation. |
