Rheta DeVries, Betty Zan, Carolyn Hildebrandt, Rebecca Edmiaston, and Christina Sales, RegentsÕ Center, wrote a new book that came out in October that was published by Teachers College Press. Rick Traw, Curriculum and Instruction, wrote an article entitled, "The Woodcrafters' City" that will be published in the January issue of Language Arts, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Bud Bowlin, Accounting, had his article, "Experiential Learning: Benefits for Academia and the Local Community," published in Management Accounting Quarterly. "Benchmarking the Efficiency of Government Warehouse Operations: A Data Envelopment Analysis Approach," written by Bowlin and colleagues outside UNI, was accepted for publication in the Journal of Cost Analysis & Management. Celia Renner and Bud Bowlin, Accounting and Janet Rives, Economics, collaborated on "The Significance of Gender in Explaining Senior Executive Pay Variations: An Exploratory Study," which was accepted for publication in the Journal of Managerial Issues. Mohammed Y. Rawwas, Marketing, had his manuscript, "Culture, Personality and Morality: A Typology of International Consumers' Ethical Beliefs" published in the International Marketing Review. David Saiia, Management, had an article, "Philanthropy and Corporate Citizenship: Strategic Philanthropy is Good Corporate Citizenship" published in the Journal of Corporate Citizenship. Chris Schrage, Management, had two essays published in "Succeeding in Business in Central and Eastern Europe, a guide to cultures, markets, and practices." Authors- Woodrow H. Sears and Audrone Tamulionyte-Lentz ,Published by Butterworth Heinemann. He will have two essays published in Succeeding in Business in Central and Eastern Europe, a guide to cultures, markets, and practices, published by Butterworth Heinemann. Linda May Fitzgerald, Curriculum and Instruction, and Christopher Kliewer, Special Education, published an article titled "Disability, schooling the artifacts of colonialism," in the Teachers College Record, vol. 103, no. 3, p. 4 (June 2001). Jim O'Loughlin, English, published an essay, "Bad Metaphor: The Problem with the 'Community' in 'Cybercommunity,'" in Proteus: A Journal of Ideas 18.2 (Fall 2001): 85-88. Bill Shepherd, Music, has had a book published, "Basics of Conducting Workbook with CD-ROM Video." Jerry Smith, Music, had his paper, "Thinking skills: The question of generality," accepted by the Journal of Curriculum Studies. Mike Klassen, Marketing, had two articles, "Lots of Fun, Not Much Work, and No Hassles: Marketing Images of Higher Education," and "At the Intersection of Demand Creation and Demand Fulfillment: Which Schools are Getting There First and Why," published in the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education. A third article, "Relationship Marketing on the Internet: The Case of Top- and Lower-Ranked US Universities and Colleges," will appear in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services. Mike and Pola Gupta, Marketing, co-authored "Viewers' Evaluations of Product Placement in Movies: Public Policy Issues and Managerial Implications," in the Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising. Paul Chao, Marketing, wrote "A Cross Country Comparison of the Codes of Professional Conducts of Certified/Chartered Accountants," with Jakubowski, Huh and Maheshwan and it has been accepted by the Journal of Business Ethics. A second article, ÒThe Moderating Effects of Country of Assembly, Country of Design and Country of Parts on Hybrid Product Evaluations,Ó will appear in the Journal of Advertising. |

Kenneth Atkinson, Philosophy and Religion (CHFA) presented a paper, "The Phineas Tradition in the Testament of Moses: Martyrdom and the Zeal of Taxo," at the National Meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature in Denver, CO, Nov. 19, 2001. Mary Herring and Sharon Smaldino, Curriculum and Instruction, along with James Russell, Purdue, presented a workshop titled "Teaching TomorrowÕs Teachers to Integrate Technology" at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology International Conference. Herring and Smaldino also presented: Inservicing the Preservice Educator. They discussed the use of the UNI's InTime grant materials to support students in COEÕs Educational Media course. Chris Denison, Recreation and Aquatics, was a co- facilitator at the Aquatics Roundtable at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Aquatic Symposium, October 11-13, College Station, TX. He was a co- presenter on Sever Weather Protocol. Jason Follett, Teaching-MPLS, recently presented the following sessions at the October 15-16, 2001 Iowa Council for the Social Studies Conference: "The American Promise and We the People...The Citizen and the Constitution; "Job Alike: Behavioral Sciences" and "Introducing Latino Culture into Secondary Social Studies Classrooms." Chris Schrage, Management, presented a paper titled "Student Travel Preferences: A comparative study of university students in Israel, South Africa and the United States"at the 10th Biennial Conference on International Marketing- Cardiff, Wales. Jim Langel, Wellness and Recreation Services, presented a program "Student Professional Development" at the Region V National Intramural and Recreational Sports Conference, Oct. 15. Kathy Gulick, University Health Services, presented a program "The Future of Wellness and Recreation Programs" at the Region V National Intramural and Recreational Sports Conference, Oct. 15. Yury Lerner, Industrial Technology, presented a paper ÒSleeveless Direct Pour Gating SystemÓ at The Seventh Asian Foundry Congress (AFC-7), on Oct. 12-17, 2001, in Taipei, Taiwan. Anne Myles, English, presented a paper, "The Power and Perils of Identification, or, There's Something about Mary," at the Third Biennial Conference on Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s), Oct. 19. James E. O'Connor, APR, University Marketing and Public Relations, presented his professional development workshop, "Where does it hurt? A diagnostic model for client, account and issues management" at the 2001 Public Relations Society of America International Conference, Oct. 30 in Atlanta. Dale Cyphert, Management, had her paper ÒVisual Aids vs. Visual Rhetorics: Lessons from the PowerPoint Controversy,Ó named a top divisional paper at the National Communication Association Annual Convention, where she also presented ÒHigh Class Thinking, Low Class Workers or Literate Academic Elitism?Ó and David Saiia, Management, presented a paper titled ÒCorporate Ecology and Community DefinitionÓ at the National Communication Association Annual Convention. Mike Klassen just returned from the European Institute of Retailing and Consumer Services and the Academy of Business Disciplines where he talked about "marketing lessons learned from four decades of nutritional advertising." Lou Honary and Patrick Johnston attended the National Lubricating Grease Institute where Lou presented ÒA Status Report on Promoting the Use of Biobased Lubricants Made of Commodity and Enhanced Vegetable Oils.Ó Lou Honary presented at the Railway Tie Association meeting on ÒNew Bio-Based Oils for Use in Wood Preserving.Ó |

Mary Herring, Curriculum and Instruction, serves as the president of Association for Educational Communications and Technology Teacher Education Division. She also serves on the Curriculum Committee and Distance Learning Definition and Terms committee. Jason Follett, Teaching-MPLS, has been elected Secretary for the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs for a term ending June 30, 2003. As Secretary, Follett will also serve on the ICLA Executive Committee. UNI Jazz Band One, directed by Robert Washut, has been invited to perform at the 29th Annual Conference of the International Association of Jazz Education in Long Beach, California, January 7-12. The invititation to perform was based on a taped audition. Jazz Band One is one of ten university jazz ensembles selected to perform from tapes submitted by collegiate big bands from around the world. Andy Martin, Wellness and Recreation Services Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, was Co-Chair for the National Intramural and Recreational Sport Association (NIRSA) Outdoor Recreation Symposium held July 8-11, 2001 at the New River Gorge, West Virginia. Andy's duties included planning the symposium itinerary and to assist with the selection presentations. Sally Ludwig, Malcolm Price Laboratory School, was recently recognized as the Special Educator of the Year by the state association. Craig Pitcher, MPLS, was named the NICL Volleyball Coach of the Year. Lori Smith, MPLS, was named the Elementary P.E. Teacher of the Year for the State of Iowa. Richard Utz, English, was invited to serve an additional year as review editor for "The Medieval Review," the world's most widely distributed review journal in Medieval Studies. Catherine Zeman, RRTTC, was elected president of the Industry Recycling Foundation for the State of Iowa. Bud Bowlin, Accounting, received the Society of Cost Estimating and Analysis National Estimator/Analyst of the Year-Education Award for 2001. David Saiia, Management, is this year's winner of the University Book and Supply Award. The award honors a non-tenured faculty member for contributions to teaching in the College of Business Administration. Lou Honary, ABIL, won an author award for ÒPerformance and Characteristics of Soybean-based Greases Thickened with Clay, Al Complex and Li Complex,Ó which appears in the NLGI Spokesman magazine, featuring ABIL in the cover picture. |
