Rheta DeVries, Carolyn Hildebrandt, and Betty Zan, Regents Center for Early Developmental Education, published an article titled “Constructivist Early Education for Moral Development” in a special January 2000 issue of Early Education and Development.

Yury Lerner, Professor of Industrial Technology has published “Development of an Improved Direct Pour System for Aluminum Casting” in Procedings of First International Conference on the Gating, Filling and Feeding of Aluminum Casting, pp.148-154.

Keith Clifton has several recent publications. His review of “Honegger” by Harry Halbreich appeared in the December issue of Notes. Two articles related to Arthur Honegger and Francis Poulenc appeared in the Reader’s Guide to Music published by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers. His paper “Autobiography in the Cocteau/Poulenc Monodrama” has been accepted for the symposium “Cocteau’s World” at Penn State in March 2000.

Sue A. Joslyn published an article titled “Racial Differences in Breast Carcinoma Survival” in Cancer (Jan. 2000). Pp. 114-123.

Edginton, C., Hudson, S.D. and others released a book titled, Leadership for Recreation and Leisure Programs and Settings, 2nd Edition. Sagamore Publishing.

… JoAnn Schnabel is featured in a new book by Richard Zakin, Ceramics, Ways of Creation: an exploration of 36 contemporary ceramic artists and their work. Her ceramic artwork, “Basic Necessities” was also published in the November 1999 issue of Ceramics Monthly magazine in an exhibition review on the Kennedy-Douglass Annual ceramic competition for which she won the Tile Award.

Kenneth Atkinson, assistant professor of philosophy and religion, was the subject of a feature on KUNI radio program “Voices of Iowa” on Dec. 26, 1999. The segment discussed Atkinson’s recent publications, archaeological work, and discoveries on the Dead Sea Scrolls concerning the violent Davidic Messiah and how the Dead Sea Scrolls help us to understand the Christmas story.

Roy R. Behrens, professor of art, will be featured on “Living in Iowa” on Iowa Public Television (Channel 32) on Friday, Feb. 11 at 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Part of the program was filmed on the UNI campus and includes discussions with graphic design students.


Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

Jill Uhlenberg, UNI Child Development Center coordinator, presented a seminar at the National Association for the Education of Young Children annual Conference in New Orleans, in November. The seminar was called, “Managing the many roles of directors and teachers at campus child care centers: The complexities of working with children, parents, college students, administrators and professors.”

Faculty of the Industrial Technology Department made following presentations:

Andy Martin, Outdoor Recreation coordinator, Wellness and Recreation Services, recently presented at the International Conference for Outdoor Recreation & Education (ICORE) held in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Conference dates were Nov. 8-11, 1999. His presentation was titled “Outdoor Equipment Rental Manuals...What They Can Do For You.” The conference was sponsored by AORE (Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education).

Carolyn Hildebrandt and Betty Zan, Regents’ Center for Early Developmental Education presented a workshop titled, “The Value of Cooperative and Competitive Games in Early Education” at the Association for Constructivist Teaching Conference, Oct. 23, l999, in St. Louis, Miss.

Carolyn Hildebrandt, Taunjah Bell, Betty Zan, and Tim Stoeckel presented a paper titled “Differential Benefits of Competitive and Cooperative Games Among First Graders” at the Association for Moral Education Conference, Nov. 19, l999, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Yury Lerner, Professor of Industrial Technology has presented “Recent Trends and Developments in Permanent Mold Casting of Iron” at the International Foundry Congress, Istanbul,Turkey, October 1999.

Awards/honors/service

Mary Bozik, Communication Studies, and Lyn Countryman, Teaching, have been appointed to the Early Adolescent/Generalist Committee of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The Board offers teachers national certification and the committee will be meeting to review the standards for certification.

Teresa J.K. Hall, Industrial Technology, received an “Outstanding Professor of Industrial Technology” award at the National Association of Industrial Technology conference in Panama City, Fla., on Nov. 19. This was in recognition for her excellence in teaching, scholarship and service to the profession.

Larry D. Hensley, HPELS, is currently serving a one year appointment as the Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Mary Bozik, Communication Studies, has been elected as an at-large member of the Executive Board of the Central States Communication Association.

Gary Daters, Residence System Business Manager, and Deb Gray, Secretary II in Admissions, received the Sue Follon Exemplary Service Award at the eleventh annual staff development luncheon on Jan. 6.
