...Linda Walsh, Psychology, presented classroom activities at the first-annual Iowa Teachers of Psychology (IToP) conference held Nov. 17 at the Kirkwood Community College campus in Iowa City. This conference was one outcome of the American Psychological Association's Psychology Partnerships Project, geared to promote cooperation and communication between those teaching psychology at all levels (high school, 2-year, and 4-year institutions).
William W. Clohesy, Philosophy, and Konstanz A. Kuraz of the Philosophy and Religion Department presented their paper, "Realizing Rights: A Reaffirmation of Human Rights and their Vital Link to NGOs," at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action, in New Orleans, Nov.18.
Jill Uhlenberg, Department of Teaching and the Child Development Center, presented a pre-conference session at the National Association for the Education of Young Children annual conference in Atlanta, on Nov.15. The session was titled "The Kaleidoscopic World of Campus Child Care Directors: The Intricacies of Campus Politics, Budgets, Working with Students, Parents, Staff and Children."

Jim Sweigert recently represented AATSEEL at the delegate assembly of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Annual Meeting in Boston. Sweigert took part in New Visions in June 2000, and will co-present a session on this at the AATSEEL Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in December 2000. Sweigert has also been asked to write, evaluate and field-test materials for the new advanced-placement examination for Russian language. Joint work with colleagues around the U.S. will begin in December 2000.
Lou Honary, ABIL, Nov. 8, at the Environmental & Safety Conference presented, "The Status of Vegetable-Based Lubricants in the U.S. & the Research & Development at ABIL in Cedar Falls. On Oct. 28-Nov. 1, at the National Grease Lubricating Institute (NLGI), in Asheville, N. C. presented "Performance Characteristics of Soybean-Based Greases Thickened with Clay, Al Complex and Li Complex."
Marjorie Rover, ABIL Research Chemist attended the National Grease Lubricating Institute and participated in an Advanced Grease course in Asheville, N.C. Oct. 28 - Nov. 2.
Penny O'Connor, Communication Studies, was the keynote speaker for the Clarke College leadership conference, "The Choices that Lead to our Future," held Nov. 18 on the Clarke College campus.
Kenneth Atkinson, Department of Philosophy and Religion, presented a paper titled "Herod the Great as Antiochus Redivivus: Reading the Testament of Moses as an Anti-Herodian Composition," to the Pseudepigrapha Section at the National Meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature, Nov. 21, in Nashville.
Mary Frisbee Johnson Head, Department of Art, presented a solo exhibition titled "Navigating" at the CSPS Exhibition Space in Cedar Rapids Nov. 3 - Dec. 17 and presented the College of Arts and Communication Undergraduate Research Lecture at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Oct. 24.
Robert Washut, Professor of Music/Director of Jazz Studies, served as conductor for the 2000 Kansas Music Education Association's Northeast District Honor Jazz Ensemble in Kansas City, Kan. on Dec. 2nd.
Geofrey T. Mills, Finance, delivered a paper entitled "The Asian Financial Crisis and its Impact on the Euro" at the International Conference of the Association of Fulbright Scholars,in Delphi, Greece on Dec. 2. The general theme of the conference was Delphic friendship and the concept of being human.
Kurtis Meredith, Office of Education for Democracy, presented a keynote address, "Professional development organizations as a source for informed policy development and the foundation for professional integrity" at the Innovations in Education Conference in Podbanske, Slovakia Nov.17.
Dean Kruckeberg, Communication Studies, was a panelist at the pre-convention conference, "Master's Degree Communication Programs: Engaging in Shared Interests, Issues and Opportunities," at the convention of the National Communication Association Nov. 8 in Seattle.

Awards/honors/service
Teresa J.K. Hall, Industrial Technology, received the Society of Manufacturing Engineers President's Award for exemplary service as Region 9 Academic and Student Development Chair. She was honored at the Region 9 Chapter Officials Conference in October.
Connie Mullan, Secretary, Dancer Hall, was recognized by the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers as a Support Staff Service Award Winner at the UMR-ACUHO Conference Nov. 2.
Jason Follett, Teaching-MPLS, was elected Vice-Chair of the Membership Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies at their 80th annual conference in San Antonio, from Nov. 16-19, 2000. He currently serves as Membership, Mentor, and The American Promise Coordinator for the Iowa Council for the Social Studies.
Tim Lindquist, Accounting, received the Greek Chapter Advisor of the Year award for his work as faculty advisor to Kappa Sigma fraternity at this year's Greek Award Banquet.
Kurtis Meredith and Jeannie L. Steele, Office of Education for Democracy, were recently (November 2000) awarded a grant entitled, "The Orava Legacy Initiative" from the United States Agency for International Development of $301,018.00 to continue their work in the Republic of Slovakia.
