Allison Stringer, HPELS, published an article titled “Both Promise and Peril: Information Technology and Experiential Education” in The Journal of Experiential Education, (Fall, 1999). Vol. 22(2). Pp. 61-70.

…The findings from Sue Joslyn’s, HPELS, article titled “Racial Differences in Breast Carcinoma Survival” published in CANCER were featured in the Tuesday, Feb. 22 issue of the Health and Fitness section of The New York Times. This article presented information regarding information focused on African-American women and breast cancer.

Patricia L. Sitlington, Special Education, is lead author of a recently published textbook titled Transition Education and Services for Adolescents with Disabilities (3rd ed.), published by Allyn & Bacon.

Mike Klassen, Marketing, will publish an article, “At the Intersection of Demand Creation and Demand Fulfillment: Which Schools are Getting There First and Why?” in the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education.

Steve Thorpe, Economics, had two papers accepted for publication: “Automobile-Related Environmental Policies in a Spatial Model: Lessons from Theory,” is forthcoming in the Journal of Regional Analysis and Policy; and “Fuel Economy Standards versus Taxes as Environmental Policy Instruments,” is forthcoming in the Journal of Economics.

Dan McDonald, HPELS, and Terri McDonald, Malcolm Price Laboratory School, published an article titled “Festival and Event Management: an Experiential Approach to Curriculum Design” in Event Management. Vol. 6(1). Pp. 5-13.

Donna Thompson, HPELS, published an article in March titled “Playing Safe on School Playgrounds?” in Iowa Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development: Iowa Educational Leadership, vol. 2:6, pp. 2-3.

Donna Thompson and Susan D. Hudson, HPELS, authored a chapter titled “Reducing ‘Risk’ on Playgrounds” in Guddemi, M., Jambor, T., & Skrupskelis, A., Play in a Changing Society, Little Rock Arkansas: Southern Early Childhood Association, pp. 61-62. Hudson and Thompson also published an article in March titled “How Safe is Your Playground” in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, vol. 71(3), pp. 19.

Donna Thompson, Susan D. Hudson and Mick Mack, HPELS, authored an article titled “The In’s and Out’s of Designing Play Areas for Early Childhood Settings” in Early Childhood News: The Journal of Professional Development, March/April, vol. 12(2), pp. 6-8, 10-13. The three authors also published articles titled “Planning Playgrounds for Children of All Abilities,” in School Planning & Management, pp. 35-40; and “Making Playgrounds Safe” in Children and Families: The Magazine of the National Head Start Association, vol. 15:2.

Charline Barnes, Curriculum and Instruction, co-authored (with Floyd Bumpers, UNI alumnus) a photohistorical book titled Iowa’s Black Legacy. The book was featured in the Des Moines Register, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier and Burlington’s The Hawkeye newspapers.

Roy R. Behrens, Art, has published an essay titled “Legs, Logos and Ethology: So Just How Graphic Is Graphic Design?” in editor Steven Heller’s, Sex Appeal: The Art of Allure in Graphic and Advertising Design (New York: Allworth Press, 2000).

Chris W. Ogbondah, Communication Studies, has had an article, “The tribulations of the Nigerian press under General Abacha’s dictatorship,” accepted for publication in Afrika Spectrum, an international journal.

 

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

Roy R. Behrens, Art, has been invited to teach a course this summer on “Artists, Inventors and Visionaries: Making Surprising Connections in Art, Science and Daily Life” at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

Linda Walsh, Psychology, presented “Use of a ‘Walking Tour’ Library Scavenger Hunt to Introduce Freshmen to the Library and Psychology Resources,” at the Midwest Institute for Teachers of Psychology in Glen Ellyn, Ill., March 3-4.

Angeleita Floyd, Music, was a guest artist at Middle Tennessee State University Flute Festival on Feb. 20, where she presented a master class and directed the Festival Honors Flute Choir.

Mike Klassen, Marketing, presented a paper, “Promotional Images of Higher Education: Are We Misleading Students?” at the American Marketing Association Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education in New Orleans. Klassen, with Mohammed Rawwas, Marketing, also presented a paper at the Academy of Business Disciplines in Ft. Myers: “Verbal and Nonverbal Information of American, Japanese and European Auto Advertisements in the U.S.”

Celia Renner, Accounting, and Janet Rives, Economics, presented a paper at the National Business and Economics society meetings in San Diego titled, “The Significance of Gender in Explaining Executive Pay Variations.”

Carey Kirk, Management, and Allan Rappaport, Finance, presented a paper at the National Business and Economics society meetings titled, “The Economics of Shifting Fraud Induced Losses to Innocent Third Parties: A Case Study of the Winner-Take-All Character of the American Legal System.”

Celia Renner, Accounting, will present a paper, “Educating Future Accountants: Alternatives for Meeting the 150-Hour Requirement,” at the International Applied Business Research Conference in Puerto Vallarta.

Dick Followill, Finance, is presenting a paper, “Analyzing the Points/Contract Rate Choice: A Wealth Maximization Model,” at the International Applied Business Research Conference in Puerto Vallarta.

Leslie Wilson, Management, presented “Launching the Team Project: A Space Station Exercise to Simulate Common Project Management Problems,” written with Roberta

Steve Corbin, Marketing, presented a paper titled, “Six Classroom Projects to Assess Students’ Skill in Analysis and Critical Thinking and Students’ Skill in Synthesis and Creative Thinking,” at the Marketing Management Association Fall 1999 Educators Conference.

Matthew Kollasch, Education, presented “Slovakia 1994 -2000: Professional and Personal Observations,” at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids on Feb. 28. He presented slides and discussed his work in both the Orava Project and SK-Libris: The Slovak Free Flow of Information Project.

Ann Vernon, Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Postsecondary Education (ELCPE), recently presented a workshop on REBT with Adolescents in Tokyo, Japan.

Cynthia Herndon and Kathleen Kerr, HPELS, and graduate teaching assistant Ranae Keane, HPELS, presented lectures and master classes in dance at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, Feb. 14-18 and consulted with administration about a possible Masters Degree program in Dance Education at that institution.

Kathleen Kerr, HPELS, directed a performance of traditional Bosnian dance by the UNI International Dance Theatre at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on Jan. 29.

Michelle L. Swanson and Barbara A. Heitzman, Malcolm Price Laboratory School, presented “Expressive Arts in the Elementary Classroom” at the annual national conference of NALS (National Association of Laboratory Schools), in Boca Raton, Fla., in March. They discussed introductory activities as well as focus lessons integrating the arts into the curriculum.

Charline Barnes, Curriculum and Instruction, presented “More Strategies for the Language Arts Classroom: A Hands-on Approach & On-line with Adolescents: The E-mail Literacy Conversational Project” with UNI students at the Iowa Reading Association Conference on April 7.

Gloria Kirkland Holmes, Curriculum and Instruction, presented “Positive Thinking: Stirring Joy,” and Kathryn Guzman, graduate assistant in Curriculum and Instruction, presented “Stepping Outside of the Boundaries: Choosing Careers in Technology” at the Fifth Annual Iowa African-American Women’s Conference held March 17-18, in Waterloo.

Kenneth Atkinson, Philosophy and Religion, presented a paper titled “Dancing at Qumran? Women and Worship at the Dead Sea” at the Society of Biblical Literature-American Schools of Oriental Research Regional Meeting, April 2, in Kansas City, Mo.

William W. Clohesy, Philosophy, presented his paper, “Seeking Altruism in Kant’s Practical Philosophy,” at the Ninth International Kant Congress, held March 26-31 in Berlin.

Mohammad Z. Iqbal, Earth Science, along with students Keri B. Drenner, Kelly M. Knight and Craig A. Welsh, will be presenting their research “Geochemical Transformation and Residence of Inorganic Ions in Two Small Lakes in Iowa,” at the annual meeting of the North central Section of the Geological Society of America, April 6-7, in Indianapolis, Ind.

 

Awards/honors/service

Christine Macfarlane and Patricia Sitlington, Special Education, are serving as mediators for the Iowa Department of Education. They have been trained to mediate and resolve issues in regard to appropriate educational services for students with disabilities.

Dave Hakes, Economics, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Regents Faculty Excellence Award. This award is given by the Regents to recognize faculty who have “sustained records of excellence across the spectrum of faculty endeavors (teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.”

Steve Thorpe, Economics, chaired a session on the economics of controlling water pollution during the Southern Economic Association Meetings in New Orleans.

Steve Corbin, Marketing, was selected to serve for a three-year term of office on the Marketing Management Association Board of Directors.

Ann Vernon, Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Postsecondary Education (ELCPE), will be awarded the 2000 Professional Leadership Award for the American Association of Counselor Education and Supervisors.

Charline Barnes, Curriculum and Instruction, was appointed chair of the International Reading Association Teacher as Researcher Committee for 2000-2001, her second year on the committee. She also served on the Waterloo Planning Committee for the Fifth Annual Iowa African-American Women’s Conference held March 17-18, in Waterloo.

…Faculty from the Department of Communication Studies have received the following awards:
The Iowa Journal of Communication, Spring 1999, vol. 31, no. 1, won a State Journal Award from the Central States Communication Association (CSCA). The editor of the journal is Sarina Chen, and the associated editor is Susan Cusmano-Reans.
“Need Help ASAP!!!! A Call for the Development of Online Research Guidelines and Protocols” (Iowa Journal of Communication, vol. 31, no. 1, 1999) by G. Jon Hall and Douglas J. Frederick, a UNI alumnus and doctoral student at the University of Iowa, won a State Journal Manuscript Award.
The awards will be presented at the CSCA Convention Business Meeting in Detroit on Friday, April 14.

Dean Kruckeberg, Communication Studies, was a senior judge for the national competition of the 2000 Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil Awards March 24 and 25 in Minneapolis. He also was co-respondent for the top three competitive papers at the Public Relations Society of America Educators Academy conference in Miami on March 31.

Jill Uhlenberg, coordinator of the UNI Child Development Center, will take office as president-elect of the National Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers at the organization’s annual conference in Chicago, April 12-15. Uhlenberg has been a board member for seven years, including two years as secretary and one year as treasurer. She will serve one year each as president-elect, president, and past-president.
