.....Dean Kruckeberg, Professor of Public Relations, is co-author of the seventh edition of This Is PR: The Realities of Public Relations. The new edition features a case study of the Iowa Septuplets as well as examples of web pages from UNI. Kruckeberg also was co-author of the sixth edition (1996) of this major introductory textbook in public relations.

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

.....Vickie Robinson, Department of Teaching, in July, attended a two-week teacher institute at Dar al Islam in New Mexico. The focus of institute was on teaching about Islam and increasing the understanding of our Muslim students.

.....Randy Hayes, ITS Voice Services, presented “The Telecom Act of 1996: New Rules to Follow” and served on a Regulatory Issues panel, July 20, at the annual ACUTA Telecom Conference in Nashville.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, Professor of Public Relations, presented two papers,”Overlaying First World Public Relations on Second and Third World Societies,” and, “The Chop Shop Virtual University,” at the national convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Aug. 3 to

8 in New Orleans. He also was discussant for the refereed paper session, “PR Practices and Perspectives: Domestic and International,” and was a panelist at the Pre-Conference Workshop, “Public Relations Education: An Assessment of the State of the Art.” Kruckeberg also was co-chair of the meeting of the Commission on public relations education at the convention.

.....Roy R. Behrens, art, presented a paper titled “Jazz Painting: The Camouflage Inventions of Iowa Artist Everett L. Warner” at the Iowa History Forum, sponsored by the State Historical Society of Iowa, in Des Moines.

.....Carolyn Heldebrandt, psychology and Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education organized a symposium entitled “Teaching Piaget” at the International Conference of the Jean Piaget Society in Mexico City on June 4. She also presented a paper, “Teaching Piaget: What's Easy? What's Hard?” in the symposium.

.....Thomas Tritle, music department, directed the UNI Horn Choir in a concert at the Iowa Bandmasters' Association Conference in Des Moines, May 13.

.....Phil Plourde, Gail Farber, and Tom Riedmiller from the Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) will present to the MidAmerica Regional Conference for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MIDTESOL) on Oct. 1 at the University of Iowa.

Awards/honors/service

.....Rosa Maria Escude'de Findlay, Spanish instructor at PLS, was one of four Iowa women inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame on Aug. 21.

.....Jon Hall, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies, was recognized for his service to the National Association of Educational Office Professionals with the Jackie Evans Distinguished Service Award. The award, presented at the NAEOP Annual Meeting in Wichita, Kansas in July, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and leadership performance over time to the association and its membership.

.....Sue Grosboll, Director of the UNI Museum, was recently named President of the Iowa Museums Associations.

.....Nancy Isenberg's book, Sex And Citizenship In Antebellum America, received the 1999 Book Prize from the Society for Historians of the Early Republic. The SHEAR Book Prize “singles out a book published in the previous year for recognition as an outstanding contribution to the historiography of the period of the early republic in American history.” The prize consists of a handsome certificate and a substantial cash award.

.....Becky Wilson Hawbaker, PLS, won the Throne-Aldrich Award from the State Historical Society of Iowa for an article she wrote for Iowa Heritage Illustrated, Iowa's popular history quarterly. Hawbaker's article, “No Middle Ground: Change and Controversy at the Glenwood State School” was chosen as the best article published in IBI this year. The award was presented in ceremonies at the State Historical Building in June.

.....Richard Colburn was awarded the $1500 First Place Award for the color photograph “Rex's Salt Shaker, Linda and Tim's Barbeque, Magnolia, IA, 1997” at the 1999 Bi-State Competitive Exhibition held at the Davenport Museum of Art. The juror for the exhibition was Elizabeth Wright Millard, Executive Director, Forum for Contemporary Art, St. Louis, Mo.

.....Elana Joram, Educational Psychology, recently was awarded a $20,000 grant from the FINE Foundation (First in the Nation in Education) for “Promoting the Construction of Conceptual Scales: An Innovative Method for Teaching Measurement Estimation.”
