.....Harvey Hess, English-has had a chamber opera CD, The Kona Coffee Cantata, released on the Albany Records label. The recording was done in Prague, Czech Republic, by the Prague Chamber Orchestra. The music is the first that the orchestra's screening board permitted to be recorded that was composed by a living composer or librettist. Former UNI music student Jerre´ Tanner collaborated on the project with Hess.

.....Roy Behrens, art-authored "A Cold Eye: Invisible Designers" and "Primary Watercolors: The Theatre Posters of James McMullan" in the November/December issue of Print magazine. Behrens published "Four Seasons on an Iowa Farm: The Paintings of Robert Tabor" as the catalog essay for an exhibition about a depression-era artist curated by Behrens Jan. 5 to April 11 at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls. Behrens also authored "Le Corbusier's Iowa Client," about Iowa-born artist William Cook, in the February issue of The Iowa Source magazine.

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

.....Jim Becker, teaching-was one of 200 American educators to spend three weeks in Japan on a Fulbright Memorial Fund Program sponsored by the Japan-US Education Commission. Becker traveled to Japan in October, one of three teachers from Iowa on the trip.

.....Susan Hill, philosophy & religion-presented the paper "Bodies That Tell Us They Matter: Feminism, Queer Theory, Autobiography" Nov. 23 at the national meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Orlando, Fla.

.....Ronald Johnson, music-has been invited to conduct the Wind Symphony Orchestra of the Schweizer Armeespiel (Swiss Army Band). The Schweizer Armeespiel is unusual among the world's military bands, owing to the unique "citizen-soldier" tradition in Switzerland. As one of four performing ensembles within the Armeespiel, the Wind Symphony Orchestra operates on a project basis for 3-4 weeks at different times of the year, and is comprised of the leading wind and percussion players in the major symphony orchestras of Switzerland. Johnson will conduct the band July 1 in a performance at the Alpine International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Earlier that day, he will conduct a seminar for Swiss wind conductors regarding American and Hungarian contemporary wind literature.

.....Richard Colburn, art-has a solo exhibition of photographs, "Home Cooking," at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art Feb. 20 to April 18.

.....Joyce Milambiling, English-presented the paper, "Bilingual Education as Endangered Species in the U.S. and the Philippines" Nov. 26 at the English in Southeast Asia conference in Brunei. She was the only presenter at the conference from the United States.

.....Philip Suckling, geography-presented the paper, "Variation of the Koppen C-D Climate Boundary in the Central United States During the 20th Century" Nov. 22-24 at the Southeastern Division Association of American Geographers conference in Memphis, Tenn.

.....Thomas Tritle, music-performed both the Concerto No. 2 for Horn, K. 417, and the Concert Rondo for Horn, K. 371, Jan. 15 and 17 with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra. On Dec. 13, 1998, he performed the Concertino for Horn and Strings by Lars-Eric Larsson with the North Iowa Youth Orchestra.

.....Thomas Switzer, education-recently presented "Technology As Facilitator of Quality Education: A Model" and "Connecting Education and Health Sciences" Feb. 25 at the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in Washington, D.C.; Switzer also presented "Building Information Technology in Teacher Education in Colleges of Education" March 2 at the 10th International Conference of the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education in San Antonio.

.....Richard Utz, English-delivered the paper, "From the Heydays of Philology to Sporadic Investigation: Middle English Research in German" Dec. 27 at the annual Meeting of the Modern Language Association of America in San Francisco.

.....Don Williams, university health services-presented "Improved Performance through Mental Conditioning-An Exercise in Relaxation and Visualization" Nov. 14 at the Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance state convention in Des Moines.

.....Linda Walsh, psychology-presented "The Use of Online Syllabi and Required World Wide Web Readings" Jan 3-6 at the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology in St. Petersburg, Fla.

.....Roy Behrens, art-is among 77 artists from 11 Midwestern states whose artworks were chosen for inclusion in the 55th annual juried exhibition at the Sioux City Art Center. The exhibition runs Jan. 30 to April 4.

.....Hildegarde Morales, modern languages-was a presenter Jan. 25-28 at the Sixth International Symposium on Social Communication in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. The subject of her presentation was "The Foreign Language Classroom: A Place to Maximize Intercultural Communication."

..... Susan Koch, HPELS/academic affairs-was the keynote speaker on February 27 at the Universal Human Rights: Global and Grassroots conference held in Mason City in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The title of her presentation was: "In Your Hands: The Promise of Human Rights in Iowa and Beyond."

.....Iradge Ahrabi-Fard, HPELS-presented a paper in December at the 1998 American Volleyball Coaches Association Convention in Madison, Wis.

 

Awards/honors/service

.....Jim Sweigert, Terri McDonald and Lee Weber, PLS-authored a grant application that resulted in Northern University High School being chosen to participate in the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) Secondary School Excellence Program, a Russo-American high school exchange and joint project program partially funded by the United States Information Agency. NU High was one of only 20 U.S. schools selected for this new exchange, under which NU High Russian language students will travel to Smolensk School #8 in Russia in March. NU High has taken part in short- and long-term exchanges under the auspices of ACTR since 1994.

Twenty-five NU High Russian language students recently took part in the 17th-annual National Russian Essay Contest, sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). Sixteen out of the 25 students won national medals. Each year more than 1,700 high school-level Russian language students from around the nation participate in this prestigious contest.

.....UNI has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for the quality of its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). UNI was one of only a dozen universities in the nation, and the only one in Iowa, to receive the award, the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Controller Gary Shontz received an award of Financial Reporting Achievement as the lead person responsible for the report. Those working with Shontz on the preparation of the report were assistant controller Bruce Riecks, accounting manager Bryan Segerstrom, and staff accountant Denise Bouska.

.....M. Shelton Smith, psychology-received a minority supplement renewal application for her grant, "Improving Assessment of Adolescent Sexual Behavior." The grant allows more in-depth research for psychology students working in the Center for the Study of Adolescence.
