.....Leigh Zeitz, PLS—co-authored “Applying Adult Learning Concepts to Technology Integration at University Technology Malaysia” presented March 29 at the International Technology Education in Indianapolis, Indiana. Zeitz also co-authored “Teaching Technical Writing to Undergraduate Engineering Students Using the World Wide Web,” published in the proceedings of Pendidikan Untuk Kecemarlangan: Menjelang Alaf Baru (Excellence in Education for the New Millenium) at the Institute of Technology Tun Hussein Onn in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. Zeitz authored “Methods I Have Used While Trying to Overcome the Language Barrier,” distributed at a meeting of the Vice-Chancellor of University of Technology Malaysia and Institute Technology Tun Hussein Onn dignitaries at Institut Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia.

.....Andrew Burstein, history—was interviewed for the May 24 isssue of U.S. News and World Report on the language of emotion that Burstein argues shaped 18th century American political discourse. The interview was sparked by the interest of the magazine's writer in Burstein's recently published book, Sentimental Democracy.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations—co-authored “Significance of the NCA's `Dialogue on Public Relations Education' Conference,” in the spring Public Relations Review.

.....Diane McCarty and Maribelle Betterton, PLS—co-authored “Scientifically Speaking... Connecting the Past...” in the February issue of Teaching K-8; “Scientifically Speaking... .....Mary Bozik, communication studies—was a presenter on two panels April 7-11 at the Central States/Southern States Communication Association Joint Convention in St. Louis. She reported on work of the National Communication Association in the panel, “Oral Communication in K-12 Education: NCA's Role in Elevating Oral and Public Discourse”; and discussed the preparation of high school speech teachers in the panel, “Looking Forward to Classroom Communication Instruction by Looking Back on Communication Education Preparation.”

.....Lou Honary, ABIL—presented the keynote luncheon speech, “Marketing the Biodegradable Lubricants in the United State: Potentials and Barriers” May 9-13 at the American Oil Chemists Society Conference in Orlando, Fla. Honary also presented at the same conference “A Comparison of the Field Test Performance of a Soybean-Based Hydraulic Fluid With Laboratory Oxidation Test Results.” Honary presented “Preventing Pollution by Adding Value Through the Use of Renewable, Biobased, Farm Grown Industrial Lubricants From the United States” June 9 at the Midwest Pollution Prevention Conference in Kansas City, Kan. Honary also will present “The Status of Vegetable-based Biodegradable Industrial Lubricants in the United Sates” Aug. 4-7 at the Industrial Products section of the World Soybean Research Conference in Chicago.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations—presented “A Typology of Ethical Relationships and Dilemmas and an Attempt at their Reconciliation” May 29 at the annual conference of the International Communication Association in San Francisco. Kruckeberg will begin a two-year term as division chair. Kruckeberg also was a reviewer of the public relations diploma program of Seneca College, Toronto, for the Public Relations Society of America Certification for Education in Public Relations. Kruckeberg was a panelist in the program, “A Discussion of Public Relations Curricula,” at the joint annual conference of the Central States Communication Association and the Southern States Communication Association in St. Louis.

.....Phyllis Carlin and Jayne Morgan, communication studies—presented the symposium “Narrative and Dramatic Scenes in the Performance of Illness/Health Experiences” at the International Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Carlin also served as symposium chairperson and as a discussion leader.

.....Diane McCarty, PLS—presented “Exploring Quality Teaching: Perspectives from the Preservice Teachers and Cooperating Professor” at the Southeast Regional Conference of the National Association of Lab Schools; and “Saving the P Word: Guidelines for Exemplary Phonics Instruction in Today's Literacy Classes” in April at the annual Beginning Reading Conference.

Awards/honors/service

.....John Johnson, history—was selected to participate in June in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board's Advanced Placement Examinations. The College Board provides rigorous college-level courses and examinations for high school students, who may receive credit or advanced placement based on their exam score. More than 1.1 million examinations in 18 disciplines are evaluated by more than 4,200 faculty consultants from around the world.

.....Chris Denision, WRS—was accepted as a National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association Certified Recreational Sports Specialist.

.....Jim Langel, WRS—was awarded the Region V Award of Merit for outstanding contributions to the profession April 17 at the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association Conference in Milwaukee.

.....Leigh Zeitz, PLS—presently teaching at the Institute of Technology Tun Hussein Onn (ITTHO) in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia, was awarded at $3,948 grant from the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) for “Researching the Effects of Teaching Technical Writing to Undergraduate Engineering Students Using the World Wide Web” allowing Zeitz and his Malaysian associates to administer in an English III class a proposed curriculum they had presented at the National Seminar of Education at ITTHO in October, 1998.

.... Michael Millar, mathematics—was selected as the recipient of the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics by the Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America, based on his significant contributions in both graduate and undergraduate teaching.

.....Diane McCarty and David Tallakson, PLS—received a $1,000 Scholarly Activity Seed Grant from the Rosa Janssem and Henry R. and Nancy Meyer Fund for “Creating a Literacy Discussion Book Club.” McCarty also received the $2,000 “Educations's Unsung Heroes Award” sponsored by Reliastar and Northern Life.

.....Bob Washut, music—UNI Jazz Band I, directed by Washut, received the 22nd Annual Down Beat Student Music Award for College Outstanding Performance. Jazz I submitted recordings from their latest CD, “Games,” for this honor.
