.....Jennie Wang, English—published an introduction and two chapters of Chinese translation of Raymond Federman’s novel Smiles on Washington Square: A Love Story of Sorts in the December issue of Foreign Literatures and Arts, Shanghai, China. The book is being published this month by Shanghai Translation Publishing House, Shanghai, China.

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions
.....Mary Bozik, communication studies—presented the keynote address March 26 at the Northeast Iowa Language Arts Conference at Upper Iowa University. Her presentation, “National Standards for Teaching Listening: Is Anybody Listening?” shared the K-12 Listening Standards published by the National Communication Association and explored ways in which teachers can use them to develop students’ listening skills.
.....Jeffery Byrd, art—has a solo exhibition of videos and objects used in performances at the Waterloo Museum of Art. Byrd also presented a performance at the Museum. The exhibition was documented by a catalog.
.....Christopher Denison, Jim Langel and Andy Martin, WRS—will be making presentations this month at the NIRSA Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisc. Denison is presenting “Natatorium Design and Construction Challenges”; Langel is presenting “Ethical Dilemmas and the Choices We Make”; and Martin is presenting “From Seed to Sapling: Starting Your Collegiate Outdoor Recreation Program.” Martin also presented “Introduction to High Altitude Mountaineering: Hiking the Mexico Volcanoes” at the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Winter Outdoor Recreation Symposium in Colorado.
.....Anthony Gabriele and Elana Joram, educational psychology & foundations, and Paul Trafton, Diane Thiessen, Edward Rathmell, and Larry Leutzinger, mathematics—will present “Traveling the Path of Mathematics Reform: Changes in Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy and Representations of Their Students’ Thinking” April 19-23 at the American Educational Research Association annual conference in Montreal.
.....Randal Hayes, ITS-Voice Services—presented “The Telecom Act of 1996: New Rules to Follow” in two sessions March 15 and 17 at the International Definity User Group annual conference in San Diego, Calif.
.....Ronald Johnson, music—spent spring break in Hungary as guest of the Hungarian Military Music School in Budapest. This is the third successive year he has been invited to work with the students there, primarily in chamber music ensembles. He also worked with the percussion students, introducing them to American music and teaching methods.

.....Fred Behroozi, Paul Shand and Ali Badakhshan, physics—made presentations in March at the American Physical Society Centennial Meeting in Atlanta. Behroozi co-presented “Non-Contact Measurement of the Viscosity of Water as a Function of Temperature”; Shand co-presented “Effect of Anisotropy on the Spin Glass Transition in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors”; Badakhshan presented “Characterization of Polycrystalline Semiconductor Alloys” and “Observation of Direct Optical Transitions in Conductive Polymers by Electroreflectance Spectroscopy.”
.....Lawrence Escalada, physics—presented “How the Use of Technology in the Science Classroom Can Spark the Universal Success for All Students” in March at the National Science Teachers Association meeting in Boston. Escalada also presented “An Investigation on the Applicability of Activity-Based Modern Physics Instruction in a Few Secondary Classrooms” in March at the National Association for Research in Science Teaching meeting in Boston.
.....Tom Riedmiller, CIEP—conducted a series of workshops on online job hunting for international education professionals. The workshop, “The Internet Job Search for ESL! (The Internet Job Search for the Rest of Us!)” was presented in October at the MidTESOL conference in St. Louis and in March at the International TESOL convention in New York City.
.....Victoria Robinson, teaching—presented “American Perceptions and Images of North Africa” March 12-14 at the Fifth Annual Tunisian Society of Anglo-Saxon Relations’ International Conference in Tunis, Tunisia. The conference was hosted by the Universities of Tunis and Sfax.
.....Linda Walsh, psychology—presented “The Online Syllabus: Advantages for Under-Prepared, Average, or Advanced Students” Feb. 26 at the Midwest Institute on the Teaching of Psychology in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
.....Charline Barnes, curriculum and instruction—presented “Strategies for the Language Arts Classroom: A Hands-On Approach” with six undergraduate students at the annual Iowa Reading Conference April 8-10 in Des Moines.
.....Kamyar Enshayen, physics—presented the seminar, “A Tale of Two Chickens” Feb. 16 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agriculture. Enshayan presented “Reclaiming our Food from Corporate Giants” at a March 6 conference in Kansas City, and he presented the keynote address and workshop on the UNI Local Food Project at the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s annual conference March 13 in Willmington, Ohio.
.....Chris Ogbondah and Paul Siddens, communication studies—presented their co-authored research paper “Defining Traditional Forms of Communication in Nigerian Culture Within the Context of Nonverbal Communication” in April at the joint conference of the Central and Southern States Communications Associations in St. Louis. Siddens also chaired the panel, as well as a panel on a States Advisory Committee Showcase Panel. Siddens also presented the research paper “2010 and Beyond: Virtual Reality and the Communications Classroom”; and chaired the “Reflections on Teaching and Training: Moving Forward with Four Perspectives on Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Workshop/Training Perspectives.”


Awards/honors/service
.....Liz Yagla, public relations—received the Jessica Hey Award at the Waterloo YWCA’s annual meeting March 9. The award is given annually by the YWCA to recognize a volunteer for outstanding service to the YWCA, women and the community.
.....Ann Vernon, educational leadership, counseling and postsecondary education—has been appointed to the Albert Ellis Board of Trustees. Albert Ellis is the founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and is world-renowned as a therapist and lecturer. She also presented her new Passport program at the ACA national counseling conference in San Diego in March.
.....Christopher Denison, WRS—has been appointed chair of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association Aquatics Committee.
.....Jim Langel, Wellness and Recreation Services—has been appointed state director of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
.....Staff in the UNI Office of Public Relations received awards recently at the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications Epic Awards. Paul Kaufmann and Barbara Erickson received an Award of Excellence in the Audiovisual/Informational Video division for the “SAFE Playgrounds” video produced for the National Program for Playground Safety. Audrey Schroeder and Janeen Stewart received an Award of Excellence in the Newsletter/External Not-for-Profit division for the “Outlook-Welcome Edition.” Schroeder, Jeff Martin and Don Honnold received two Merit Awards in the Public Relations/Poster division, for the “UNI Baseball Poster” and the “UNI Track Poster.” Gwenne Culpepper and Schroeder received a Merit Award in the PR/Specialty division for the “UNI Jazz Band CD Cover and Insert”; and DeWayne Purdy received a Merit Award in the Radio/Hard News division for “Reaction to President Clinton’s Trip to China,” an interview with UNI Associate Professor of History Charles Holcombe produced for the Radio News Network.
.....Ron Bengston, Mary Akers, Randall Neal, Deanne Ubben and Rose Kading, Print Services—received several awards recently at the 14th Annual Gallery of Superb Printing, sponsored by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Club of Printing House Craftsmen. In the One Color Poster category, Print Services received a Gold and a Best of Show for the “Angela Brown Poster,” produced for the School of Music; and a Silver for the “Get Your Feet Wet” poster for UNI Admissions. A Silver was awarded in the Stationery/Business Cards category for “The Butch Bender Art Scholarship Fund” produced for the Art Department; and a Silver in the Brochures/Folders (2 Color) category for “Environmental Issues Instruction” produced for the Center For Energy and Environmental Education.
.....Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker, Erin Wignall and Sue Smith, PLS—were recently honored at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Area Club of Printing House Craftsmen14th Annual Gallery of Superb Printing with a gold award for the design and printing of the Iowa Science Teacher’s Fall Conference program and a silver award for the 1998 Northern University High School Commencement program. Lynn Dykstra, Morgan, Schomaker and Smith also received a Gold award for the design of the PLS Visitor’s Packet.
.....Paul Siddens, communication studies—was elected vice-chair of the States Advisory Committee of the Central States Communication Association in April at the joint conference of the Central and Southern States Communications Associations in St. Louis.
