.....Carolyn Hildebrandt, Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education and psychology-chaired the symposium "Composition, Representation, and the Grasp of Musical Consciousness" June 13 at the International Symposium of the Jean Piaget Society in Chicago. She also presented two papers, "A Longitudinal Analysis of the Vocal and Instrumental Compositions of a Young Child" and "Adults' Understanding of Children's Representations of Simple Rhythms.'"
.....Hans Isakson, finance-chaired a meeting of the Real Estate Accreditation Study Committee of the American Real Estate Society Aug. 21-23 in Chicago. The committee is developing standards and procedures for the accreditation of real estate degree programs offered by U.S. universities and four-year colleges.
.....Ron Roberts, sociology-was selected to give the keynote address to the Michigan Sociological Assocation. The title of his presentation was "Social Movements and Reflexive Ethnography."
.....Paul Siddens, communication studies-acted as chair and moderator of the panel "Using Film and Literature to Teach Principles of Interpersonal Communciation" Sept. 25-26 at the Iowa Communication Association conference in the Amanas. The panel featured the work of four UNI undergraduate students. This conference marked the end of Siddens' two year term as ICA President.

.....Robert Washut, school of music-conducted UNI Jazz Band One in performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland, and at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland in July. Washut also performed with Orquesta Alto Maiz in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. As composer/arranger, Washut has four pieces on jazz trumpeter Bobby Shew's new Latin jazz CD. The recording was released in early September on the Los Angeles-based MAMA record label. UNI Jazz Band One's new CD, "Games," features three of his compositions and arrangements for jazz ensemble.

.....Yury Lerner, Mohammed Fahmy, Teresa Hall and Scott Helzer, industrial technology-have recently received a $118,266 National Science Foundation grant.
..... Mary Urbanski, residence-has received the Distinguished Toastmaster designation in the Toastmasters International educational program. This is the highest honor that can be earned by a member of the Toastmasters organization. To receive the honor, she participated in Toastmasters' Communication and Leadership Program, conducted several seminar-style programs, served as a leader at several different organizational levels, and formed/rebuilt a Toastmasters Club.
.....Kenneth DeNault, geology-finished sixth in the Central Division of Formula Mazda auto racing (open-whel, Indy-style cars), qualifying him to compete in the national championships. In the national championships, held Oct. 5-11 in Ohio, DeNault finished 15th in the world, despite crashing into the wall in one race at 117 mph. In 22 races this year, DeNault finished first seven times. While finishing first in a national race in Brainard, Minnesota, DeNault set two new track records for fastest qualifying time and fastest lap in a race.
