.....Roy Behrens, art--has recently published three articles: "On Max Wertheimer and Pablo Picasso: Gestalt Theory, Cubism and Camouflage" in Gestalt Theory (Vienna, Austria); "Spurious Images in Art and Advertising: An Annotated Bibliography" on the website for Leonardo: Journal of the International Society of Arts, Sciences and Technology; and "Grant Wood and Frank Lloyd Wright: A Gothic Revival" in Tractor: Iowa Arts and Culture. The third article also has been reprinted in The Whirling Arrow, a publication of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

.....Roy Behrens, art--has had artworks accepted in two recent juried exhibitions: Art Show 10, an annual competitive exhibition at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls; and the 33rd Annual Area Show at the Charles H. MacNider Museum in Mason City.
.....Jeffery Byrd, art--presented a performance art piece at the Alternative Museum in New York City.
.....Yury Lerner and Mohammed Fahmy, industrial technology--presented "Inoculants Selection for Counter-Gravity Casting of Thin Wall Ductile Iron," April 6-8 at the Proceedings of the 2nd International Inoculation Conference, American Foundrymen's Society. Lerner also presented "Nondestructive Evaluation of Structure and Properties of Ductile Irons," May 12 at the Casting Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.
.....Tomma Lou Maas, English--will teach a one-week nature writing course at the Hearst Center for the Arts July 7-10, for students who wish to use more nature imagery in their writing.
.....Fred Rees, music--presented the session, "Distance learning: Interactive music instruction on the web" April15-18 at the 56th National Biennial In-Service Music Educators National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations--was a panalist on the program "Boundary Spanners" June 12-14 at the PRSA Educators Academy First Annual International, Interdisciplinary Research Conference in College Park, Md. Kruckeberg also chaired and was a respondent to the Business Sciences Division research papers, he chaired the presentations, "Winning a Seat at Tomorrow's Table" and "Teaching Managers What They Need to Know About PR," and was a panalist on the program, "Teaching International Public Relations."
Awards/honors/service
.....Roy Behrens, art--received an Honorable Mention in the 1998 Thorne/Aldrich Award, presented by the State Historical Society of Iowa, for his article on "Iowa's Contribution to Camouflage," which appeared recently in Iowa Heritage Illustrated. In addition, another of his articles, "Rudolf Arnheim: The Little Owl on the Shoulder of Athene," which is posted on the internet at the website of Leonardo: Journal of the International Society of Arts, Sciences and Technology, has been selected by the Encyclopedia Britannica for inclusion on the Britannica Internet Guide.
.....Joyce Taylor, reading clinic--was awarded a "Friend of Literacy" certificate April 17 at the spring banquet of Alpha Chapter of Alpha Upsilon Alpha, the Honor Society of the International Reading Association.
.....Roxanne Conrad, purchasing--was appointed chair of the national membership committee of the National Association of Educational Buyers, Inc (NAEB). The appointment came while Conrad was attending the Annual Meeting and Product Exhibition of the NAEB April 22-25 in Phoenix, Az.
.....Lynn Dykstra, Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker, and Sue Smith, PLS--received Best of Class from the Iowa School Public relations Association for the UNI Child Care Services brochure. Schomaker received Best of Class for the design of the Peter Pan T-Shirt. Morgan, Schomaker and Smith received Honorable Mention for the Northern University High School Commencement Program. Terri McDonald, and Ted Gaunt, PLS, received Best of Class for the production of the Price Laboratory School video.
.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations--was one of 20 professors nationwide who were awarded a 1998 fellowship to attend the Direct Marketing Institute for Professors May 27-29 in Chicago.
.....John Johnson, history--received the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award/Honorable Mention June 13 from the State Historical Society of Iowa for his book, The Struggle for Student Rights: Tinker vs. Des Moines and the 1960s.
