.....Hildegard Morales, modern languages-presented a paper at the Iowa Foreign Language Association conference Oct. 2-3 in Des Moines. The paper, presented in Spanish, was titled "Reflexiones sobre el Presente y el futuro de la ensenanza del Espanol en Iowa." Morales also was a presenter at the Second Immersion Workshop for Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in Iowa Nov. 2 in Des Moines.
Awards/honors/service
.....The Department of Residence and Department of Public Safety were awarded the Safety Program of the Year award at the annual conference of the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, Nov. 2-4 in Springfield, Missouri. The award was in recognition of "The 'S' Files," a safety program offered in a series of ten presentations by Public Safety officers in the residence halls during September. The program involved the use of an X-Files theme, incorporating safety information on the Public Safety website and "interrogations" or quizzes of students' safety knowledge at the Public Safety presentations. More than 800 students participated, an eight-fold increase over fall safety programs of years past.
.....Daryl Smith, biology-received an achievement award from the Association for Integrated Roadside Managers; the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa chapter of Nature Conservancy; and was the co-recipient of the Conservation Educator's Award from the Iowa Wildlife Foundation.
.....Deborah Tidwell and David Landis, curriculum and instruction, and Andrea DeBruin-Parecki, educational psychology and foundations-have received a bilingual education career ladder grant for over one million dollars from the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Language Affairs, U.S. Department of Education. TEAMS (Teacher Education Addressing Minority-language Speakers) will support bilingual paraprofessionals and recent high school graduates through a program of study in elementary teacher education, providing tuition , materials, and technology support.
.....Karen Paulsen, ITS-administration and Carolina Wilson, music-Paulson was installed as treasurer and Wilson as vice-president at the Annual Meeting of the Iowa Association of Educational Office Professionals Oct. 12-13 in Williamsburg, Iowa.

languages-received a certificate of recognition for her participation as
president of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese
in Iowa. The recognition came at the first workshop for AATSP chapters at
the 1998 AATSP annual meeting in August in Madrid, Spain.
