.....Allan Shickman, art-had his article, "The Fool's Mirror in King Lear," twice cited in The Arden King Lear. Another article by Shickman, "A Turning Picture in Shakespeare's Othello," was cited in The Arden Othello.
.....Leigh Zeitz and Mary Beth Kueny, PLS-recently had their chapter, "The Iowa-Japan Connection," published in Wired Together: The Online Classroom. The chapter described a telecommunications project in which Kueny's 7th grade social science class communicated with 11th/12th grade students in an English class in Osaka, Japan.

.....Mary Bozik and Melissa Beall, communication studies-presented a workshop, "Engaging Ideas: Establishing a Positive Community Climate in an Interactive Classroom," March 27 at the spring National Council of Teachers of English Conference in Albuquerque, N.M.
.....Jeffery Byrd, art-was invited to be a visiting artist at Truman State University in Missouri where he presented a lecture and taught a workshop on performance art. Byrd recently exhibited a series of photographs in a two-artist exhibition at the University of Alaska and participated in a group exhibition at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Byrd also recently displaying a series of photographs in New Mexico Photographer's 14th Annual National Juried Exhibition at Eastern New Mexico State University. His work earned a Juror's Award.
.....Anthony Gabriele, educational psychology & foundations, Linda Fitzgerald, curriculum and instruction, Betty Zan and Rheta DeVries, Regents' Center for Developmental Education-will present "Is Parental Involvement Related to Child Stress Behaviors in Developmentally Appropriate Programs for At-Risk Four-Year-Olds?" April 13-17 at the American Educational Research Association annual conference in San Diego.
.....Chris Ogbondah, communication studies-co-presented a one-day African music workshop Feb. 28 for elementary school music teachers in Iowa.
.....Debra Gordon, music-was invited to present her research on "Stress Factors in Music Teaching" at the Region VII National Association for Multicultural Education conference March 1 in St. Louis. She also was recently appointed to the Commission on Action and Co-reform through Intentional Networking at the Association of Teacher Educators in Feb. 13-17 in Dallas.
.....Tomma Lou Maas, English language and literature-recently completed a five-week residency at Hansen Elementary School in Cedar Falls teaching third and fifth grade students to write poetry. The students gave a poetry performance on the last day, February 19th.
.....Linda Walsh, psychology, presented "Use of a 'Pick and Choose Checklist' in Large Introductory Psychology Classes" at the Midwest Institute on the Teaching of Psychology at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill.. Her presentation was selected to receive the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (APA Division 2) Outstanding Poster Award for the conference, which included a years free membership in the Society as well as a $500 travel grant and invitation to present the poster at the 1999 American Psychological Association Meetings in Boston.
.....Melissa Beall and Marilyn Shaw, communication studies-presented a workshop session, "Technology in the Basic Communication Course: One Computer, Multiple Uses" Feb. 14 at the Western States Communication Association in Denver, CO. Beall was selected as chairperson of the K-12 Interest Group of the Western States Communication Association. She will plan the Vancouver, British Columbia, 1999 conference program for the group. Shaw was selected as chairperson-elect of the K-12 interest group of the Western States Communication Association. She will plan the Sacramento conference program for the year 2000. Beall and Shaw presented a workshop on "Computer Presentations in the Communication Fundamentals Course" Feb. 6 at the Midwest Basic Course Director's Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations-proctored the Accredited in Public Relations examination March 14 for the Greater Dubuque Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
Awards/honors/service
.....Carol Fletcher and Margaret Empie, residence-have received the designation of Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association. The FMP is the industry's most respected certification program, recognizing those who demonstrate an exceptional level of experience, knowledge and leadership within the profession.
.....Mary Friedrich, mathematics-has been named president-elect of the UNI chapter of the Association of Educational Office Personnel (AEOP). She is also the state newsletter editor for the Iowa AEOP.
.....James McCullagh, social work-is the recipient of a subcontract for $207,455 from the University of Iowa for FY97-98 (administered by the Center for Social and Behavioral Research) to sponsor training programs for the Iowa Child Protective Training Academy. McCullagh was also awarded a subcontract for more than $160,000 from Iowa State University for FY97-98 (administered by the Center for Social and Behavioral Research) to sponsor numerous training programs for the Iowa Department of Human Services.
