.....Roy Behrens, art-authored "History in the Mocking" in the May/June issue of Print magazine. The article has also been featured in the August/September issue of Civilization magazine. Two other articles, "Rudolf Arnheim: The Little Owl on the Shoulder of Athene" and "Art and Camoflauge: An Annotated Bibliography" are on the website for Leonardo: Journal of the International Society of Arts, Sciences, and Technology.

He also participated in discussions on an EU-sponsored research project "Higher Education and Graduate Employment in Europe."

.....Richard Utz, English-delivered the plenary lecture, "Medievalism and the National Temper: Philology, Mediaevalismus, and Mittelalterrezeption in Germany and North America," Aug. 15 at the Twelfth International Conference on Medievalism, Canterbury Christ Church College, England.
.....Catherine Farris, anthropology-presented the paper, "Women's liberation in China and Taiwan: Historical, Cultural, and Comparative Perspectives," Aug 28-31 at the Second Annual Conference on the History and Culture of Taiwan, at Columbia University in New York City. She will present a revised version of this paper Oct. 16-18 as part of her invited participation at a seminar on "Social and Political Changes in Postwar Taiwan," sponsored by the Joint Center for East Asian Studies; Washington University, St. Louis; and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
.....Daya Shankar, communication studies-presented "Diffusion of Global Values through Cinema" and "The Network Approach in Conducting Cross-Cultural Research" at the annual conference of World Communication Association in Costa Rica.

Awards/honors/service

.....Lyn Countryman, teaching-is a state finalist and potential national awardee for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.
.....Robert Reason, DOR-has been named chair of the programming committee for the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers. Reason will be responsible for the association's 1998 conference.
.....UNI's participation in the Iowa Service-Learning Partners was recognized Aug. 8 by Governor Branstad in a ceremony in Des Moines. The Iowa Service-Learning Partners is a consortium including Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, the Iowa Department of Education, area education agencies, local school districts, community colleges and the four-year private colleges within the state.
.....Lynn Dykstra, Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker, and Sue Smith, PLS-received three design awards from the Iowa School Public Relations Association: "Best Overall" and "Best of Category" for the NUHS Commencement Program; and "Best of Category" for the PLS Brochure.
.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations-is the recipient of the 1997 Pathfinder Award, the highest award presented by the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education.
.....Linda Walsh, psychology-had her flower garden featured July 20 in the 1997 Garden Tour sponsored by the Cedar Falls Historical Society.
