Koch also was the keynote speaker for the South Dakota State University Women's Day Conference held March 27 at Dakota State University in South Dakota.
.....Thomas Tritle, music-performed a set for Baroque arias for horn and voice, accompanied by Robin Guy of UNI's School of Music and Jeffrey Snider from Wartburg College at the opening concert of the Midwest Horn Workshop April 11-13 at the University of Iowa. Tritle also directed the UNI Horn Choir on the finale of the concert, which included dances from the Vienna Waldhorn Society, performed by the UNI International Dance Theatre, under the direction of Kathleen Kerr, HPELS. Tritle also served as horn choir reading session conductor and competition adjudicator for the workshop. In addition, Tritle served as visiting horn instructor April 17-18 at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, where he gave private lessons, presented a recital and gave a lecture on the "Practical Application of Just Intonation."

He discussed the book he co-authored, Public Relations and Community: A Reconstructed Theory. He was also a panelist in the program "Issues in Undergraduate Public Relations Education: Creating the Capstone Course," and was a discussant in the program "Environmental Activism and Public Relations," at the Central States Communication Association convention April 9-13 in St. Louis.

They also received two awards at the 12th Annual Gallery of Superb Printing, sponsored by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Area Club of Printing House Craftsmen; a gold award for the Northern University High School Commencement Program, and a silver award for the Principal's Guidebook.

.....William G. "Gary" Wolfe, marketing-accompanied seven UNI student members to their 1997 Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE) National Convention April 1-6 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as their faculty advisor. While there he served on the PSE National Educational Scholarship Committee (NES) to select recipients of seven NES scholarships, participated as the mentor for a collegiate competitor in the PSE Pro-Am Sell-a-Thon; served as a judge for several PSE National Award competitions and was among five finalists for the 1996/97 Top PSE Faculty Advisor Award.Wolfe was also named "Outstanding Student Advisor" for the second year.

.....Jeremy Beck, music-had his composition "HoUsE miX" (1996) read by the American Composers Orchestra in New York City. His composition "Impressions" (1996) for unaccompanied 'cello was performed in an Iowa Composers Forum Concert in Cedar Rapids. Beck will hold a residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts (NY) in May.

.....Barbara Ripp Safford, curriculum and instruction-recently received the Intellectual Freedom Award sponsored by the Iowa Educational Media Association (IEMA) and Social Issues Resources Services, Inc. (SIRS). The Intellectual Freedom Award is given to an individual who promotes intellectual freedom in his/her sphere of influence and beyond, and who has met or resisted attempts at censorship.
.....The NU High School team won its fourth straight state title in the 1997 State of Iowa Olympiada of Spoken Russian conducted recently on the Marshalltown Community College campus. It is sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian, Washington, D.C. The team is coached by Jim Sweigert, Russian instructor at NUHS. Sweigert also accompanied 14 NUHS juniors and seniors on an ACTR-sponsored trip to NU's partner school in Tyumen, Russia.
