.....Jeremy Beck, music-presented lectures on American music at the Universite Catholique de L'Ouest in Angers, France. His "Gemini" for flute, 'cello & piano was performed in Des Moines as a part of the Iowa Composers Forum Tenth Anniversary Celebration; and his chamber opera "Laughter in Jericho" was premiered by Golden Fleece, Ltd., the Composers Chamber Theatre in New York City.

.....Mary Bozik, communication studies, participated as a panelist on the panels "Standardizing the Curriculum in Communication Studies K-12," "Examining the New NCATE Guidelines for Teacher Education," and "The Past as Prologue: NCA's Role in K-12 Education" at the convention of the National Communication Association Nov. 20-22 in Chicago. Bozik and Ronnie Bankston presented the paper, "The Development of an Interactive Video Masters Program in Communication Education."

She also co-presented "Males' and Females' Reasoning About the Care of Elderly Family Members" at the Association of Moral Education conference Nov. 20 in Atlanta, Georgia.

.....Richard Utz, English-is recipient of a research mini-grant (1997/98) of the College of Neuphilologie at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, to edit Medievalism: A Festschrift for Leslie Workman.

.....Marvin Jensen, communication studies-has been elected to the national Board of Directors of The Names Project Foundation.

.....Lynn Dykstra, Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker and Sue Smith, PLS-received a Silver Award for the 1996 Northern University High School Commencement Program from the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen, Inc. at its International Convention in Seattle. More than 2,800 entries were submitted from North America, Australia, England, Hong Kong and Ireland.

.....Rick Traw, curriculum and instruction-has been appointed to serve as a member of the Standing Committee Against Censorship for the National Council of Teachers of English. The committee is responsible for keeping teachers and the media informed about censorship as it affects teachers and about strategies for dealing with censorship of school materials.

.....Rick Truax, communications studies-received the University of Missouri-Columbia Distinquished Thesis Award for his thesis, "Developing a Dialogic Approach to Documentary Photography: Photo Elicitation as a Method to Covering 'The Hill,' an Italian-American Community in St. Louis, Missouri," The thesis now goes into a regional competition of Midwest graduate schools.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations-was elected the academic co-chair of the Commission on Public Relations Education, which consists of nearly 50 representatives from eight U.S. scholarly and professional associations. The Commission will make curricular guidelines and recommendations for public relations education in the United States that will be in effect during the next decade.
