.....Mary Bozik and Melissa Beall, communication studies-presented the keynote session at the Iowa Communication Association Convention, Sept. 13 in Newton. The session, entitled "K-12 Standards: What? Why? And Who Cares Anyway?" introduced the new national standards for Speaking, Listening, and Media Literacy produced by a task force of the Speech Communication Association, on which both served. Bozik also chaired two sessions exploring articulation issues between high school and college speech classes.

Koppensteiner also lectured at the Linguistic University's American Center on "Understanding Other Cultures Through Education." .....Sue Behrns, Iowa Waste Reduction Center-recently completed an eight-week outreach education and demonstration project in Idaho. Behrns is the Mobile Outreach for Pollution Prevention (MOPP) Program Manager. The MOPP is a specially designed 34-foot motorhome that houses pollution prevention and waste recycling equipment. The vehicle traveled to 34 communities in Idaho to conduct workshops, seminars, exhibits and demonstrations to small businesses.

.....Marc Moulton, art-had a commissioned piece installed and dedicated this summer outside the Grimes State Office Building in Des Moines. This two-piece structure of brushed steel and stacked limestone commemorates the contributions of Iowa's diverse ethnic heritage to Iowa's past, present and future. It was commissioned by the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and funded in part by the Iowa Arts Council.
.....Gary B. Shontz, controller-has been given the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement by the Government Finance Officer's Association of the United States and Canada. The comprehensive annual financial report from the University of Northern Iowa met the high standards of the program, judged by an impartial panel from Washington, D.C.
.....Sue Joslyn, HPELS-was elected as co-chair of the state Breast Cancer Detection Core Team for 1996-97. She has been on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, Iowa Division, since 1993.
.....Terri Lynn McDonald, Price Lab-was chosen as the 1996 recipient of the R. Paul Brimm Dissertation Award from the Iowa Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. The award will be presented at the Iowa ASCD conference in Des Moines on Oct. 14.
