.....Tim Lindquist and Ron Abraham, accounting-have had their computerized financial accounting simulation known as Whitepeak Incorporated accepted for publication in conjunction with the Kieso & Weygandt Intermediate Accounting textbook. The simulation will be integrated into the text, which is the top-selling intermediate accounting text in the nation. Lindquist also has had "An Experimental Test of Cooperative Learning with Faculty Members as Subjects" accepted for publication in the Journal of Education for Business.

.....Naomi McCormick, family services and psychology-is guest editor of "Bodies Besieged: The Impact of Chronic and Serious Physical Illness on Sexuality, Passion, and Desire," a special issue of The Journal of Sex Research. Also, her journal article, "Relationships Between Public Safety Officers and Students" was published in Campus Law Enforcement Journal. McCormick also was cited extensively in the Oct. 6 edition of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, in the article, "Love by the Book."

.....Ken Bleile, communicative disorders-authored the textbook Articulation and Phonological Disorders: A Book of Exercises (Second Edition).

.....Vani Sundaraiyer, mathematics-had the article, "Estimation of a Process Capability Index for Inverse Gaussian Distribution," published in the October 1996 issue of Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods. Sundaraiyer also co-authored, "Alternative Method of Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Parameters from Type I Censored Inverse Gaussian Data," to be published in the Journal of Applied Statistical Science.

.....Aaron Podolefsky, social and behavioral sciences-has published "Teaching and Learning Anthropology in the Twenty-First Century" in The Teaching of Anthropology: Problems, Issues, and Decisions.

.....K.N. Rajendran and Hari Hariharan, marketing-will have the article titled, "Understanding Value: The Role of Consumer Preferences," published in the Journal of Marketing Management.

.....Sandra Alper, special education-co-authored an article entitled, "Teaching Meal Planning to Youth with Mental Retardation," which was accepted for publication in Remedial and Special Education. Dr. Alper also authored a book chapter on "Teaching Academic Skills Embedded in Leisure Activities to Persons with Disabilities." The chapter appeared in Recreation, Sport, Culture, and Tourism for the 21st Century, published by Hong Kong Baptist University.

.....Patricia Sitlington, special education-was lead author of Assess for Success: A Handbook on Transition Assessment, published by The Council for Exceptional Children. She also published a chapter, "Transition to Living: The Neglected Component of Transition Programming for Individuals with Learning Disabilities," in Transition and Students with Learning Disabilities: Facilitating the Movement from School to Adult Life.

.....Mary Beth Kueny, teaching/MPLS-was co-author of "Technology in the Classroom," and author of "Informing Faculty Development," a book review for NEA, in the Thought and Action Journal.

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

.....Tim Lindquist, accounting-co-authored a presentation in a forum of the National American Accounting Association Meeting in Chicago, Ill., in August 1996, "National Culture and the Implementation of Continuous Improvement Performance Standards: An Experimental Investigation." Lindquist also co-authored, "MS National Culture: Influence of Justice in Setting Stretch Targets," accepted for presentation at American Accounting Association Management Accounting Conference, San Antonio, Texas, in November 1996.

.....Barbara Caron, design, family and consumer sciences-presented "The James J. Hill House: Symbol of Status and Security" at the Interior Design Educato's Council Midwest Regional Conference Oct. 11-12 in Minneapolis.

.....Carol Poster, English-is presenting a paper, "Ars Dictaminis and Ars Poetriae: Liberal and Technical Education in the Middle Ages" at the Oct. 24-26 meeting of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association, where she is also Area Chair for the Classical Greek Language and Literature Section.

.....Donna Thompson and Susan Hudson, HPELS-released the National Program for Playground Safety's "National Action Plan for the Prevention of Playground Injuries," at a national news conference Sept. 19 in Washington, D.C.

.....Sue Behrens, Rick Bauer and Sue Sommerfelt, IWRC-conducted an Automotive Pollution Prevention Strategies workshop and MOPP (Mobile Outreach for Pollution Prevention vehicle) demonstration Oct. 16-17 in Springfield, Mo. Behrens also recently completed a cooperative project with the University of Nebraska and Nebraska Department of Environmental Protection to bring the MOPP to Scotts Bluff, Grand Island, Columbia, Omaha and North Platte community college campuses.

.....Dave Bradney, ITC-presented a two-day short course on the "Principles of Aluminum Casting Design," Sept. 16-17.

.....Carolyn Hildebrandt, psychology and Regents' Center-presented "Claps and Gaps: Adults' Representations of Simple Rhythms," at the Mind and Time conference in Neufchatel, Switzerland. The conference was conducted in honor of the 100th anniversary of Jean Piaget's birth.

.....Wilfred Johnson, Upward Bound-represented Iowa Governor Terry Branstad at a Men Against Destruction, Defending Against Drugs and Social Disorder Conference Aug. 1-4 in Omaha, Neb. Johnson read the Governor's speech during the event.

.....Georgia Bonatis, HPELS-presented "Ordinary Movements, Extraordinary Dances," at the Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance conference Nov. 1 in Des Moines. Bonatis is also the dance chair-elect for IAHPERD.

.....Jane L. Wong, psychology-co-presented two papers; "Differential Response to Bias Patterns in Patients with Frontal Lobe Epilepsy vs. Frontal Lobe Lesions," and "Depression and Performance on the California Verbal Learning Test: Two Case Examples," at the Annual Meeting of the National Academy of Neuropsychology Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, 1996, in New Orleans.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, public relations-was a guest speaker at the Oct. 17 meeting of the Quad Cities/Iowa-Illinois Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in Davenport. Kruckeberg and University of Iowa professor Kenneth Starck discussed "Public Relations: Restoring a Sense of Community," a presentation based on their book, Public Relations and Community: A Reconstructed Theory.

.....Susan Koch, HPELS-served as a member of the faculty for the National Conflict Resolution Education Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Oct. 17-19 in St. Louis, Mo. She presented three sessions titled, "Quality Conflict Resolution: Understanding Essential Elements," "Foundations in Conflict Resolution" and "NAME at NIDR: National Support for Program Development."

.....Phil Hibbard and Wes Taylor, ITS-presented at the joint conference of the Iowa Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Iowa Computer Using Educators (ASCD/ICUE). Using ITS-Training's mobile computer lab, they gave a five-hour hands-on workshop on developing computer-based presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.

.....Thomas J. Switzer, education-president of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU), recently attended the fall meeting of the Council in Baltimore, Md. He gave the presidential address, "Disconnect: Education Deans and Faculty-Teacher Education and Schools."

.....Flavia Vernescu, modern languages-chaired a session entitled, "Warm-up Activities," at the Iowa Foreign Languages Conference in Waterloo, October 1996.

.....Terry Kottman and Jeff Ashby, EAC-co-presented a pre-conference workshop titled, "Creative Arts Techniques for Play Therapists," at the annual meeting of the International Association of Play Therapy in Chicago, Ill.

.....Crit Streed, art-recently closed an exhibition of her paintings and installations at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She is currently exhibiting in communication studies the Iowa/Oaxaca Art Exchange at CSPS in Cedar Rapids. The show was on exhibition earlier this year at the Galleria Rufino Tampayo in Oaxaca, Mexico.

.....Jeffery Byrd, art-recently presented an evening-length performance art piece titled, "The Stone Above the Sky," at the N.A.M.E. Gallery in Chicago, Ill.

.....James F. Fryman and Bonnie R. Sines, geography-gave a presentation titled, "Academic Cartography, 1985-1995," at the annual meeting of the North American Cartographic Information Society in San Antonio, Texas.

.....Mary Beth Kueny, teaching/MPLS-presented two lectures at the Midwest Regional Middle Level Educators Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D. in October. "Crime Stoppers: A Logical Combination for Science and Social Studies," and "To Conform is the Norm: Middle School Students as Sociologists," were the themes of her presentations. Kueny also had a presentation titled, "Conformity and Peer Pressure," at the Iowa State Education Association Mobile In-Service Training Lab of Cedar Falls, in September and in Denison at the Denison High School in October.

Awards/honors/service

.....Clare Struck, Price Lab-was awarded the "Season of the Child" award from the Family and Children's Council. Struck co-authored the "Take Charge of Your Body" curriculum, for which the award was given.

.....M. Shelton Smith, psychology-had her AREA grant titled, "Improving Assessment of Adolescent Sexual Behavior" funded for three years.

.....Donna Raschke, Melissa Heston, Chris Kliewer and Linda Fitzgerald, education-recently had the project, "Transforming Early Childhood and Primary Teacher Education Programs to Prepare Educators for Inclusion," funded by the Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education for $22,000. Raschke also wrote a three-year project titled, "Preparing Regular and Special Education Teacher Teams in Best Inclusionary Practices for Children with Severe Disabilities Utilizing the Newly Implemented Information Highway in a Cooperative Program Across the Three Iowa Regent Institutions." The project was awarded $325,348 by the U.S. Department of Education.

.....UNI Roadside Vegetation Management Program, Center for Energy and Environmental Education- has been nominated and selected to receive the Merit Award given by the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club. The award was presented at the Sierra Club annual dinner Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Colony Haus Restaurant in the Amana Colonies.

.....Sandra Alper, special education-has been awarded $91,000 for the 1996-97 year, approved by the U. S. Department of Education, to fund a master's level personnel preparation grant titled, "Preparing Educators for the Inclusion of Students with Severe Disabilities."

.....Patricia Sitlington and Sandra Alper, special education- have been awarded $86, 797 in funding for the second year of a three-year federal grant titled, "Preparation of Personnel for Transition of Youth with Disabilities to Adult Life."

.....Marvin Jensen, communication studies-was awarded the Iowa Communication Association Citation Award (ICA) for Outstanding Service at its annual conference Sept. 14 in Newton. Jensen is the 22nd recipient of the Citation Award and the seventh UNI faculty member to be recognized.

.....Shivesh Thakur, philosophy and religion-has been elected by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, established by the Government of India, to be the National Lecturer for India this year. He will deliver lectures at five universities in India during December and January on "Modernity, Nationalism, and Religious Fundamentalism," "Liberation Theology and Social Justice," and "The Ethnic Rights and the Ethic of Duties."

.....Allan Stamberg, cooperative education-has been elected president of the Iowa Association of Cooperative Education, a professional organization made up of university co-op administrators and business/industry personnel administrators. In this position, he also will serve as state of Iowa director for the Midwest Cooperative Education Association.
