.....John W. Johnson, history-edited and contributed three major essays for Sports and the Law: Major Legal Cases, Garland Publishing. The volume contains 50 original essays. The book is one in the series "American Law and Society" edited by Johnson. Charles E. Quirk, history, wrote one essay and co-authored another. Several other UNI faculty also wrote articles for the volume: Marchell M. Austin, HPELS; Sharon Huddleston, HPELS; Robert F. Martin, history; and Robert Neymeyer, history. Other authors with UNI faculty connections include: Ted Hovet, Jr., son of Grace Ann and Theodore Hovet, English; and Timothy J. Wiles, former reference librarian. Hovet Jr. currently is a member of the Department of English, Western Kentucky University. Wiles now serves in the Research Department, National Baseball Library and Archive.

.....Robert Byrnes, music-conducted the UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club in Austria and Italy on European concert tour over spring break. In Austria, 53 students from the Glee club performed in Grodig (just outside Salzburg) and at the Wilten Monastery Church in Innsbruck. After a concert in Bolzano, Italy, the singers performed for a Mass at St. Peter's Basicila in Rome.

.....Michael Fanelli, teaching-served on a panel at the national Conference of the American String Teachers Association and the Music Educators national Conference in Kansas City. He gave a lecture/presentation on "The History and Future of String Education in the United States and The Influence of the Teaching of Paul Rolland." He also conducted an orchestra clinic with the martin Grove collegiate Institute Orchestra from Toronto, Canada, at Wartburg College. The orchestra was traveling and performing in Iowa as guests of the Waverly-Shell Rock School district. In addition, he will conduct the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra, a UNI Suzuki School affiliate, at the Seventh Annual Suzuki Conference of the Americas in Chicago, May 26. NIYO is the only youth orchestra invited by a national tape audition to perform on the International Concert at the four-day conference. Fanelli presented demonstrations of interactive teaching and field experience observations with elementary and middle school string classes being taught over the SEC/Price Lab fiber optic system with Terri McDonald, teaching, for the Cadre Conference held at Price Laboratory School on April 24 and 25. He also presented demonstrations of the Introduction to Music Education class at the UNI ICN Center with Fred Rees and Debra Gordon, music.

.....Marci Ray, Iowa Waste Reduction Center-presented a session entitled "Waste Minimization: Case Studies" to the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association Industrial Pretreatment Workshop. She also will present a session on pollution prevention strategies, household hazardous materials management and Iowa Waste Reduction Center services to the Region VI Wastewater Operators annual meeting in May.
.....Fred Rees, music-presented papers entitled "Interactive televised instruction: Stepping into a new era of music education" at the national College Music Society/Association for Technology in Music Instruction Conference in Portland, Ore.; and "A preliminary evaluation of the University of Northern Iowa's master of music program in music education on the Iowa Communications Network" at the Technological Directions in Music Education Conference in San Antonio. Additionally, he participated as a panel respondent in the session "Music, Critical Thinking, and Reform: Classrooms of the Future" and chair of the clinic, "Internet and Music Teaching: What is the Internet and How does it Work?" at the Music Educators National Biennial In-Service Conference, held in Kansas City, Mo.

Siddens, communication studies-acted as a respondent to the panel "Issues in Heath, Communication and Technology" at the Central States Communication Association Conference in St. Paul, Minn. He also presented a demonstration in another panel on the use of computer presentation technology in the Interpersonal Communication classroom.
.....Thomas Tritle, music-directed the horn choir in the final concert of the Midwest Horn Conference in Wichita. The concert included the premiere of Tritle's transcription of Gerald Finzi's "White-Flowering Days." Tritle also performed "The Everlasting Voices" of Ka Nin Chan, with solo dancer Georgia Bonatis, HPELS. Choreography was by Kathleen Kerr, HPELS, with costuming by Carol Colburn, theater.

.....Robert Washut, music-directed UNI's Jazz Band One in a public performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Prior to the performance, Washut conducted a jazz clinic for area high school jazz band students and directors.
.....Betty Zan, research fellow, Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education-presented a program via satellite in Illinois on May 1, 1996. She spoke about the book she co-authored with Rheta DeVries (director of the Center): Moral Classrooms, Moral Children: Creating a Constructivist Atmosphere in Early Education.
.....Jeremy Beck, music-selected to receive a Howard Foundation merit award for his "Composition of a New American Opera based on a story of Edgar A. Poe."
.....Julie Bright, Intercollegiate Athletics-elected to the board of directors of the Association of Collegiate Licensing Administrators and will serve as treasurer. Her term officially began at the organization's annual business meeting held in San Diego. She also serves as district representative for the College Athletic Business Managers Association.
.....Nancy Justis, Intercollegiate Athletics-has received word that the 1995 University of Northern Iowa Football Media Guide has placed fifth in the nation in the 1-AA category in the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Publication Contest. Justis wrote and edited the 80-page book featured at last fall's 100-year celebration of Panther football.
.....The Office of Public Relations and KUNI were among the award winners at the recent EPIC (Excellent Performance in Communications) banquet held at the UNI Slife Ballroom, sponsored by the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications.
Receiving awards of excellence from the Office of Public Relations were: Susan Chilcott, Donavan Honnold, Beth LaVelle and Jeff Martin for Northern Iowa Today magazine; Susan Chilcott, Janeen Stewart, Gerald Anglum, Barbara Erickson and Merri Moser Knudtson for the Great Teaching Campaign; and Donavan Honnold, Gerald Anglum, Beth LaVelle and Jeff Martin for the UNI Student Life Guide, a 4-color brochure.
Receiving merit awards from the Office of Public Relations were: Gwenne Culpepper for her magazine article, "As the Twig is Bent"; Donavan Honnold, Merri Moser Knudtson and Jeff Martin for Prospectus, a 4-color booklet for prospective students, parents and guidance counselors; and Susan Ehrlich, graphic design student assistant, for the "Welcome Back UNI" fall 1995 poster.
KUNI's Greg Shanley received an award of merit for "Alexander's Message" in the radio hard news category.
.....JoAnn Schnabel, art-awarded First Prize in the national juried Clay, Fiber, Paper, Glass and Wood Exhibition at The Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames. She also has been elected as a director at large to the Board of Directors of the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts.
.....Paul J. Siddens, communication studies- was named chair of the Instructional Resources Division of the Central States Communication Association during the organization's recent conference in St. Paul, Minn.
.....William G. "Gary" Wolfe, marketing-serving as a volunteer faculty advisor, has successfully guided and facilitated the establishment of two student organizations at UNI, both officially chartered in March. Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), the only national professional coeducational fraternity in marketing, sales management and selling, was formally chartered as the Epsilon Theta Chapter with 47 charter members from some 17 majors. Founded in 1952, PSE has grown to more than 45,000 members representing more than 125 chartered collegiate chapters in the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Mu Kappa Tau (MKT) National Marketing Honor Society was formally chartered with 17 charter members. Membership in MKT is extended to marketing majors having a minimum 3.25 GPA and who are in the top 10 percent of their class as juniors, top 20 percent as seniors, or are graduate students who have completed their course work and comprehensive exam. MKT was founded in 1966 and has collegiate chapters at nearly 100 university campuses nationwide.
In his first year as a faculty advisor, Wolfe received an "Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award" for 1995-96 by the UNI Student Organization Judging Committee. His award was based on essays submitted by the UNI PSE chapter and the UNI American Marketing Association (AMA).
