.....Bob Byrnes, music and University Carillonneur-has had his piece for carillon (the 47-bell instrument in the UNI Campanile) included as one of 12 compositions on a new CD titled Carillon-Class of 1892 Bells issued by Princeton University as part of its 250th anniversary celebration. The recorded "Westminster" was performed by Lisa J. Lonie of Trinity Church in Holland, Pa., as part of the "Inaugural Concert Series from the Summer of 1993" at Princeton.

.....Don DeGraaf, HPELS-co-authored "A Comparison of Barriers to Leisure and Sport Activity Participation in the United States: Implications for Hong Kong" in the January 1996 issue of Hong Kong Recreation Review.

.....Christopher Edginton and Carole Hanson, HPELS-co-authored "The Leadership Assessment Center: Camp Adventure - A Case Study" in the January 1996 issue of Hong Kong Recreation Review.

.....Albert Gilgen, psychology-has been informed by Dr. Edward Dunbar at UCLA that the East-West Questionnaire, developed in 1979 by Gilgen and Jae Cho (a Korean student at UNI who is now a Ph.D. clinical psychologist in California), will be included and discussed in The Handbook of Multicultural Measures and Social Attitudes, to be published by Taylor & Francis. The East-West Questionnaire, designed to measure the degree to which individuals' belief systems represent traditional Eastern and Western thinking, is also included in Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes, published by Academic Press in 1991. Gilgen is now supervising a thesis project which will investigate the relationships among belief systems as measured by the East-West Questionnaire, locus of control tendencies, and authoritarianism.

.....Elana Joram, educational psychology and foundations-two co-authored papers to be published: "The effects of response format on beliefs about random sampling," in Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, and "Conceptions of learning and knowledge: Does training make a difference?" in Contemporary Educational Psychology.

.....Fred Kolkhorst and Forrest Dolgener, HPELS-co-authored "Perceived Exertion and Blood Lactate Concentration During Graded Treadmill Running" in European Journal of Applied Physiology, 1996, Vol. 72, No. 3.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, communication studies- "The Challenges for Public Relations in the Era of Globalization" in the winter 1995-96 issue of Public Relations Quarterly. He also wrote the lead article, "The Best and the Brightest," in the March 1996 issue of ISPRA News, the periodical of the Iowa School Public Relations Association. The article urges school public relations practitioners to pro-actively encourage students of color to consider public relations as a career opportunity.

.....Mohammed Rawwas, marketing-co-authored a manuscript entitled "A Cross-Cultural Investigation of the Ethical Values of Consumers: The Potential Effects of War and Civil Disruption," conditionally accepted by the Journal of Business Ethics.

.....Richard Varn and Rusty Martin, telecommunications-co-authored "Unpredictable Opportunities," in the March issue of State Legislatures. The article examines how government leaders might respond to the growth and spread of the Internet and its infinite possibilities.

.....Linda Walsh, psychology-the 1996/97 edition of the book of readings Annual Editions: Biopsychology, for which she serves on the Advisory Board, has just been released.

Presentations/lectures/exhibitions

.....Frank Barrios, Jennifer Oliver, Augustine Osman, and Shelton Smith, along with several UNI students, psychology-presented research (four poster presentations) at the International Conference of Behavioral Medicine in Washington, D.C.

.....Jeremy Beck, music-gave lectures on new American music and his own music at the Prague Conservatory, the Plzen Conservatory and the University of West Bohemia in the Czech Republic. A concert of his music was also produced in Plzen. Closer to home, the Iowa Flute Festival at Grinnell College commissioned and premiered his Memory Embraced for flute choir in January, and he has now been commissioned by the Iowa Music Teachers Association for a piano trio to be premiered at the IMTA's Annual Convention in Davenport in June.

.....Maria Carroll, social work-presented "Healing-The Spiritual Journey through Brokenness to Wholeness" at the Youth Services Consortium conference in Portland, Ore.

.....Bill DiBrito, institutional research-organized and moderated an invited panel presentation, "Senior Professionals Forum: Using Data in Decision Making and Policy Development," and moderated a focused dialogue for student affairs administrators, "Enacting Changes on Our Campuses." In addition, DiBrito was asked to serve on the 1997 Convention workshop planning team for issues related to training and instrumentation for assessment of students learning and development.

.....Paula Eubanks, art-has been accepted as an exhibitor in "Approaching the Millennium, Real Life in the '90s," a juried photo biennial featuring 30 artists from across the nation. The exhibit will run April 25 through May 25 at Maud Kerns Art Center in Eugene, Ore. Eubanks also has presented two papers: "Movement in children's drawings" at the National Art Education Association meeting in San Francisco, and "Art as a language for data presentation" at the annual International Conference on Qualitative Research in Education in Athens, Ga.

.....Barbara Fast, music, and Laura Beauchamp, Furman University-co-presented "Using Keyboard Technology to Enhance Artistic Listening and Learning" at the Music Teachers National Association national conference in Kansas City, Mo.

.....Teresa Hall, industrial technology-co-presented "Implementing Industrial Quality Practices in Manufacturing Education Departments" at the International Conference on Education in Manufacturing: Preparing World Class Manufacturing Professionals, in San Diego.

.....Elana Joram, educational psychology and foundations-presented "Building Meaning for Measurement" to Sigma Xi at UNI. Also, a co-authored paper, "Building meaning for units of measurement: A 'Personal Anchors' approach," will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association, New York, N.Y., in April.

.....Dean Kruckeberg, communication studies-discussed global public relations at the Public Relations Student Society of America Central District Conference recently held in Iowa City. He discussed ethics at the Greater Fort Worth Chapter Public Relations Society of American Professional Development Program, in Fort Worth, Texas.

.....Music faculty Barbara Fast, pianist; Jonathan Chenoweth, cellist; and Jeremy Beck, composer-presented a performance and discussion of Beck's Sonata for Cello and Piano (1988) at the Great Plains Chapter Meeting of the College Music Society, held at Drake University in Des Moines.

.....Kevin O'Kane, computer science-will present a paper entitled "A Medical Record Web Access Script Language" at the American Medical Informatics Association Congress, June 6, in Kansas City, Mo.

.....Mahmoud Pegah, computer science- "The Assignment Problem: Decision Versus Search" has been accepted for presentation at The Eleventh International Conference on Systems Engineering, ICSE96, Las Vegas, July 9-11. He also, along with Weizheng Zhang (graduate student), and Sidney Bos (undergrad), has had "Traffic Management and Congestion Control in ATM Networks" accepted for the same conference.

.....Dennis Schmidt, accounting-will present a paper entitled "Taxpayer Agreement With Aggressive Tax Advice" at the Western Meeting of the American Accounting Association, May 16-18, in Jackson, Wyo.

.....Daya Shankar, communication studies, and Cheryl Timion, teaching-presented a program on cultural diversity, "The Salad Bowl Metaphor," to the local chapter of the American Association of University Women.

.....Jerry Smith, management-presented a paper on "Identifying Quality Problems: Case-Based Prescriptions," which was published in the conference proceedings; and conducted a day-long workshop on "Quality Problem Solving;" at the Minnesota Quality Conference, held in Minneapolis.

.....Ann Vernon, educational administration & counseling- conducted a two-day workshop in Saskatoon, Saskechewan, on effective counseling strategies with children and adolescents. She also will be presenting at the American Counseling Association in Pittsburgh in April.

.....Linda Walsh, psychology-made a presentation on the use of World Wide Web resources in class and for advising purposes at the Midwest Institute on the Teaching of Psychology at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill.

.....Jennie Wang, English- presented a paper, "The Socratic Scholar and Asian American Soldier in Kingston's 'The Brother in Vietnam,'" at the 26th Popular Culture Association Conference in Las Vegas.

.....Deborah Zlotsky, art-featured in a one person exhibition entitled "Pursued by History" at the Artemisia Gallery in Chicago, April 2-27.

Awards/honors/service

.....Richard Colburn, art-awarded Special Recognition in Photography in the "Iowa Artists 1996" exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center. The juror for this exhibition was Janet Farber, associate curator of 20th Century Art at the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha. Four photographs are included in "Images 96," an exhibition of photographic and electronic/digital imagery at the Sheppard Art Gallery, University of Nevada, Reno. Colburn also has work included in "Reframing Tradition" in New Haven, Conn. The jurors for the exhibition were Susan Kismaric of the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art and Todd Papageorge, who holds the Walker Evans Chair in Photography at Yale University.

.....Rheta DeVries, Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education, and Carolyn Hildebrandt, Regents' Center and psychology-were invited to attend the Cornerstones Forum, March 4-6, in Berkeley, Calif. At the meeting, they worked with teachers, administrators, researchers and grant-makers from across the nation to help formulate a vision statement for the Cornerstones Alliance, which will consist of parents and professionals who are working toward the common goal of promoting social, intellectual and ethical development in children during elementary school years.

.....Lou Honary, industrial technology-has been named the recipient of the Fluid Power Society's 1995 Industrial Distinguished Achievement Award. He was selected for his nationally recognized research on the use of soybean oil as a hydraulic fluid.

.....William G. "Gary" Wolfe, marketing-has been invited to serve as a session moderator for a Career Session on Sales & Sales Management at the 18th Annual American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference being held in New Orleans, April 11-13. He serves as the faculty advisor for the UNI Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA).

.....Mohammed Rawwas, marketing-will receive an "Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award" for 1995-96 on April 9. The decision was based on two submitted essays by the International Student Association and the International Club of Business Students. This is the third consecutive year Rawwas has been selected for this award.

.....The UNI Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and PRide (the student run public relations firm), advised by Gayle Pohl, received awards at the recent PRSSA Central District convention in Iowa City. The UNI PRSSA is one of 17 chapters in the district. Awards were given in seven categories. UNI took honors in six categories: District Director Citations and "Outstanding Chapter" for President, Firm, Newsletter, Fundraiser, and the most coveted Outstanding award for the chapter itself.

.....UNI Jazz Band One, under the direction of Robert Washut, was awarded Outstanding Band recognition at the 29th Annual Elmhurst Jazz Festival held in Chicago on Feb. 25. UNI was invited to participate at the festival along with jazz bands and combos from Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, North Dakota, Indian, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio.

.....Mike Yohe, Information Systems & Computing Services-served as the program chair for "The Widening Circle," the ACM/SIGUCCS 23rd Annual Computer Services Management Symposium in St. Louis.
