Johnson, history, who also wrote the preface for Sports and the Law and provides editorial consultation for the series.

.....Susan J. Koch, HPELS-presented the keynote address to the National Violence Intervention and Prevention Institute July 12 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. The title of the address was "Peacebuilding in Action: Preventing Violence Through Conflict Resolution." Koch also presented a break-out session titled "Conflict Resolution for All Ages."
.....Phyllis Carlin, communication studies-had research on the lives of rural women incorporated into Iowa's display at the American Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in June and July. Carlin also participated in the festival as a researcher/presenter, and an article and photo are being included in the American Folklife Festival's annual book.
.....Maria Basom, modern languages- participated in the Spring 1996 International Symposium "Women's Health Issues in Russia," in Iowa City May 17-18. Basom presented a paper "Women's Health Issues in Contemporary Russian Newspapers."
.....The Art Department's recently produced recruitment and promotion poster won three best of category awards at the Marketing, Advertising and Communications Professionals of NE Iowa annual awards banquet April 27. The awards were in the following categories: illustration, two or more colors; self promotion; and print materials, four or more colors. The poster also was nominated for best of show. Roy Behrens was the art director, Osie Johnson was the illustrator, and Philip Fass was the designer.

.....Lynn Dykstra, Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker and Sue Smith of Price Laboratory School Communication Center received design and printing awards from three organizations: from the Superb Gallery of Printing, a Gold Award for the UNI Suzuki School Annual Concert poster; from the Marketing, Advertising and Communication Professionals of Northeast Iowa, an Award of Merit for the Northern University High School Commencement program; and from the Iowa School Public Relations Association- Best of Category for the NUHS Commencement program, and honorable mentions for both the Ross Nielsen Dedication program and the Portraits of PLS poster. PLS Portraits credits include design by Sara Schwarz and artwork by PLS elementary students.
.....Financial Aid Office staff-received the John E. Moore Award at the Spring 1996 Iowa Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Conference. The award is presented to one institution each year for exemplifying the highest standards of service and commitment to students and the community.
.....KUNI Public Radio staff have received more than a dozen statewide awards recently. At the Iowa Associated Press annual awards May 3 in Des Moines, Greg Shanley won first place in general reporting for "Alexander's Strategy"; Bill Menner earned first place in the public affairs category for his "Waterloo School Crisis" coverage, and KUNI staff received a third place for caucus coverage; Menner also received a first place for his feature story, "Methamphetamine Project," and a second place in investigate reports for "Data Privatization"; and in the editorials category, KUNI received first place and an honorable mention for commentaries produced by Pat Blank.
On May 4, the Iowa Broadcast News Association presented its annual awards in Des Moines. In the large-market radio division, the KUNI news department took first place for overall excellence, as well as KUNI's coverage of the Iowa caucuses. KUNI earned a second place award in the best large-market radio newscast category. Honorable mentions went to Blank for her in-depth report "Non-Traditional Schools," and Menner for his "Methamphetamine Project" report. The IBNA also honored Shanley for producing the state's top feature story, "Bluesman," which looked at the career of Waterloo musician Louis McTizic.
Earlier this year in Minneapolis, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, which covers a six-state region, recognized Menner for his "Waterloo School Crisis" story.
.....Nancy A. Marlin, provost & psychology-was a member of the North Central Accreditation team for Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. The team conducted its site visit May 5-8.
.....Janeen Stewart, office of public relations- has been elected president of the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications for 1996-97.
.....Muriel Stone, placement and career services-was recently elected to vice-president, college for the Midwest Association of Colleges and Universities to serve for the 1996-97 academic year. She is currently serving as secretary for the association which links placement offices and colleges relations departments in business and industry.

.....The UNI Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), advised by William Gary Wolfe, marketing-received an award at the 18th Annual International Collegiate Convention in New Orleans for "Fundraising Projects."
* The UNI Chapter (Epsilon Theta) of Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), advised by William Gary Wolfe, marketing-has received an award for "Top Membership Recruiting-Highest Percent Increase in Membership" (out of more than 125 collegiate chapters) at the PSE 40th Annual National Convention in Anaheim, Calif. Scott Sernett, UNI Chapter Vice President of Marketing (1995-96) and President-elect (1996-97) received the $1,500 "Sales and Marketing Executives International Scholarship," awarded to one PSE collegiate member nationally.
.....William Gary Wolfe, marketing-has been elected to a two-year term on the board of directors for the Marketing, Advertising, Communication (MAC) Professionals of Northeast Iowa and will serve as membership co-chair for 1996-97.
.....Rick Knivsland, Price Lab-has been selected as a 1996 Arts Education Fellow, a competitive fellowship program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Council for Basic Education. The fellowship awardees receive $2,500 for between four and eight weeks of self-directed summer independent study.
.....Rick Knivsland, Price Lab-participated in the field testing of the National Board Assessment for early adolescence through young adulthood art. The assessment process includes completing an eight-part portfolio and participating in a one-day assessment event at an assessment center.
.....Susan Koch, HPELS, was awarded a scholarship for participation in a course at Harvard University entitled "Human Rights and Health."
.....Carole J. Hanson, HPELS, was honored by the Iowa Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) as the 1996 recipient of the Richard J. Slattery Professional Award, "in recognition of outstanding, dedicated and unselfish service to the profession." This is the highest award given annually by the IPRA.
.....Peggy Ishler, curriculum & instruction-is serving as President for the 1996/97 year of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE).
.....UNI Print Services won awards in three categories in the 11th Annual Printing Awards Banquet, Superb Gallery of Printing, sponsored by the Cedar Falls/Waterloo Craftsmen's Club. Eric Blake and Mary Cohn received a first place Gold Award in the 2-color brochure category for the Campus News Network newsletter. Blake and Cohn also received two second place Silver Awards, one in the category single-color brochure and folder, for the Northern Iowa football ticket order form, and the other in the multiple piece display category, for the admissions career brochure. Print Services has won awards at the Annual Printing Awards banquet each of the past five years.
.....The Office of Public Relations garnered three awards at the 1996
awards banquet sponsored by the Marketing, Advertising and Communications
Professionals (MAC) Club of Northeast Iowa. In the print materials/annual
report category, the Iowa Waste Reduction Center Annual Report won best
of show. The report was written by the IWRC's Kathleen Gordon, designed
by Beth LaVelle with photos by Bill Witt, both of Public Relations. In the
print materials, brochures/booklets category, the UNI Student Life publication
earned a merit award for designer Beth Lavelle, copywriter Gerald Anglum
and photographer Jeff Martin. In the audio-visual category, the UNI Recruitment
Video earned a merit award for writers Gerald Anglum and Barbara Erickson
and videographers Craig Olson and Paul Kaufmann.
