.....Scott Giese, Metal Casting Center and Industrial Technology - presented a Casting Design seminar session at the Pacific Design Engineering Show and Conference in California.

.....Vince Gotera, English - read poems from his book, Dragonfly, for an ongoing series of programs call "Origins: Dialogues on Writing and Culture" sponsored by the Center for Literary Arts at San Jose State University in December. As part of the same series, Gotera and poets Yusef Komunyakaa and Genny Lim presented their poems in an experimental concert with the Eddie Gales Jazz Band.

.....Randy Grabowski, Bryan Bennett, Max Bonecutter, Jeff Funderburk and Tom Tritle, all members of Northern Brass Quintet - performed at University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana and Indiana State-Terre Haute. The ensemble group also instructed master classes at Northern Illinois.

.....James G. McCullagh, Social Work - presented the following at Social Work '95: National Association of Social Workers Annual Meeting held in Philadelphia: "Termination of Parental Rights in Iowa: An Analysis of Appellate Court Decisions," "School Superintendent Julia Richman: Early Champion of School Social Workers," and "School Social Work's Contribution to the Formation of NASW: Promoting a Unified Profession."

.....Flavia Vernescu, Modern Languages - organized and chaired a special session entitled "Thematic and Technical Aspects of the 20th-Century French Essay" at the MLA annual convention in Chicago. She also presented a paper, "Emil Cioran: the Philosopher and the Stylist".

Awards/honors/service

.....Jim Becker, Teaching - elected president of the Iowa Foreign Language Association at the group's annual meeting held in Des Moines. The association is made up of modern language teachers on all levels of instruction and has over 500 members. He will hold this office for the next two years. At this conference, Becker was in charge of the the technology session focusing on using the Internet for enhancing the curriculum. Earlier this year, Becker received a scholarship from the National Foreign Language Research Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study computer applications for teaching modern languages.

.....Geofrey Mills, acting dean, College of Business Administration - awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for 1995-96 as director of the Hong Kong-America Center at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Mills had been directing the center from Cedar Falls last fall, but moved to Hong Kong in December to complete his one-year assignment. Through the center, Mills is working to strengthen ties between institutions of higher education in the United States and Hong Kong and help facilitate faculty exchanges. He is directing fund raising and grant efforts, as well as coordinating conferences and seminars for intellectual exchange. The center's work is especially important as the Chinese deal with the issues that are being raised as Hong Kong prepares for the end of British rule in 1997.

.....Gerri Perreault, director of Leadership Studies, Educational Administration & Counseling - has been invited to serve on the Advisory Council for a new national journal, Women and Leadership: Sharing the Vision .

.....Staff from the Office of Public Relations received three silver awards and eight bronze awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education's Mid-America District Recognition Program. The awards were presented at the District Conference held January 13-17 in Denver, Colo. Silver award winners were: Gerald Anglum, brochure copywriting for the student recruitment publication, "Adventures in Learning"; Donavan Honnold and student designer Sue Ehrlich, visual design for the Diversity Week poster; Paul Kaufmann, Gerald Anglum, Gwenne Culpepper, radio advertising for the Evening Degree program ad, "Crickets at Night"; bronze award winners were Janeen Stewart, Merri Moser Knudtson, Jeff Martin, visual design for the poster "Try Us On For Size"; Merri Moser Knudtson and Gwenne Culpepper, visual design for the University Museum newsletter; Janeen Stewart and Merri Moser Knudtson, visual design for the Great Teaching video packaging; Craig Olson, Barbara Erickson, Paul Kaufmann, Gerald Anglum, for the student recruitment video, "UNI Unplugged"; Paul Kaufmann and Gerald Anglum, for a video news release, "Marathon Class"; Paul Kaufmann, Gerald Anglum, Gwenne Culpepper, TV public service announcement, "Veteran Professors" and radio advertising for the Evening Degree Program ad, "The Difference Between Night and Day."
