.....John W. Johnson, history - named to the Fellowship and Grant Committee of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association in West Branch. He begins a three-year term, joining five other faculty members from colleges and universities in Iowa. The committee evaluates applications from scholars around the globe who apply for travel grants to come to West Branch to study in the Library Archives. The committee also reviews book submitted by university presses in the annual Herbert Hoover Book Award competition.
.....Gerri Perreault, leadership studies - was one of 20 individuals nationwide to be invited to the founding meeting of the Coalition of Leadership Studies Programs held at North Central College in Chicago. The meeting was sponsored by Harvard University and NCC.
.....Gayle Pohl, communication studies - in coordination with Crisis Services of Black Hawk County, a division of Family Service League, was interviewed for a half-hour segment on Hog radio station in relation to Rape Awareness Month for which her students from PRide, the student-run public relations firm, implemented a public relations campaign. Also, Pohl, in coordination with Crisis Services, the Meryl Hearst Lecture Series and the UNI Speakers' Fund Committee invited Nancy Ziegenmeyer, a rape survivor, author, and movie subject, to speak on rape and empowering rape victims. Pohl and Ziegenmeyer were interviewed by KOWL radio.
.....Paul Rider, chemistry - re-appointed for another 3-year term as the executive director of the Iowa Academy of Science. He completed his seventh year in the position at the 107th Annual IAS Meeting recently held at Wartburg College. With almost 2,200 members, the IAS is the fourth largest state academy of science in the country. Its offices have been located on the UNI campus since 1967, with all three executive directors (including Rider) also being faculty members in UNI's Department of Chemistry.

.....Jeannie Steele and Kurt Meredith, UNI faculty currently serving as co-directors of the Orava Project in Slovakia (a collaborative effort between UNI and Slovak officials), have written a successful grant to the United States Information Agency (USIA) for $10,500 to support the educational leadership component of the project. The competitive grant was selected on the basis of the strength and success of the Orava Project.
.....Muriel Stone, Placement & Career Services - elected secretary to the Midwest College Placement Association for 1995-96. The association represents college/university placement officials and employers from the business/industry and government sectors. Also, Stone recently attended the Near East/South Asia Conference for Teachers in Athens, Greece. While on this trip she also met with teachers (some UNI alum) at the American Community School in Athens, the Universal American School of Kuwait and the American School of Kuwait, all schools that recruit and hire from the UNI Overseas Placement Service for Educators.
.....The University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One, directed by Robert Washut, music - won an outstanding performance award in the college big band category of Downbeat Magazine's annual Student Music Awards. This is the second "O.P."award for UNI Jazz Band One in three years. In addition, student trombonist J.C. Sanford and bassist Steve Charlson both won individual "O.P." awards in the college jazz instrumentalist category.
.....Lynn Dykstra, Sharlene Morgan, Bev Schomaker and Sue Smith of Price Laboratory Communication Center received four awards from the Iowa School Public Relations Association: best overall and best of category for the PLS Emergency Handbook, best of category for the Beginning Reading Conference Flyer, and best of category for the Pemst brochure. Sandra Hendrickson of the Center for Educational Technology-Graphic Imaging Services provided the logo design for the Pemst brochure.
