.....Michael Fanelli, teaching - presented lectures/demonstrations at the Sixth Annual Suzuki Conference of The Americas Chicago II: "Eliminating Excessive Tension in the Action of String Playing," "Pedagogical Exercises and New Music for the Suzuki Bass School," and "History of Double Bass Pedagogy from the 17th Century to the Present." Fanelli also was guest conductor and clinician at the 1995 Dorian Orchestra Festival at Luther College. He conducted a 150-member orchestra concert composed of students from Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. In addition, he presented a masterclass for students and teachers on "Refining the Concepts of Double Bass Playing."

.....Carolyn Hildebrandt, psychology and the Regent's Center for Early Developmental Education - presented "Children's and Adolescents' Reasoning about Social and Biological Aspects of Sexuality and AIDS" at the Society for Research in Child Development meeting in Indianapolis. The paper was part of symposium entitled "Children's Conceptions of AIDS and its Behavioral Causes." She also presented an invited address entitled "The Pros and Cons of Praise" to a meeting of Phi Delta Kappa.
.....Jürgen Koppensteiner, modern languages - gave a workshop-presentation on current Austria at the spring meeting of the American Association of Teachers of German, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, at Lafayette College, Easton, Pa. He also participated at a panel on "Austria's Most Prolific Literary Critics." In addition, he presented a lecture, "'The Land of Smiles?' Reflections on Austria's Fiftieth Anniversary" at the University of Iowa.
.....Dean Kruckeberg, communication studies - was a guest of the Commonwealth Trust for the 17th Annual Commonwealth Awards ceremonies in Wilmington, Del. Kruckeberg was on the nominating committee that selected Charles Kuralt for the $25,000 mass communication award that is administered by the PNC Bank of Delaware.

.....James Robinson, philosophy & religion - presented a paper on cosmology and ethics in Chinese thought at the annual meeting of the Upper Midwest section of the American Academy of Religion, where he also chaired a panel of World Religions. Robinson also will present a paper on the similarities and differences between mystical forms of religion and esoteric religion at a conference in honor of Jiddu Krishnamurti, a famous spiritual thinker, at Miami University of Ohio, Oxford, Ohio, on May 20.

.....Gary Wolfe, marketing - a paper, "Examining How Sales Managers Evaluate Their Salespeoples' Performance" at the 1995 National Conference in Sales Management in Atlanta, Ga. Wolfe joined the UNI Department of Marketing this year from Arizona State University, where he is completing his Ph.D.
.....Philosophy & religion - three faculty members will participate in the meeting of the "Philosophers for Social Responsibility" held in conjunction with the American Philosophical Association Central Division meeting in Chicago, April 26-29. Fred Hallberg will present a paper entitled, "There is a Breeder in Your Future-After Eighteen Years," at the "Prospects for Nuclear Renewal" session. The paper is an exploration of the policy of renewing the nuclear power option in this country. Jerry Soneson will be commenting on the paper and David Morgan will be chairing the session.
.....Gerald Anglum, Office of Public Relations - ran in the 99th Boston Marathon finishing with a time of 3 hours 23 minutes 49 seconds, placing 3,171st out of approximately 10,000 participants.
.....Jim Becker, teaching - awarded a stipend by the National Foreign Language Resource Center to attend the 1995 NFLRC Summer Institute on Technology and the Human Factor in Foreign Language Education. The institute will be held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, July 17-21.
.....Carl Bollwinkel, teaching - recently had two projects selected for funding: "Science and Mathematics: A Thematic Approach," awarded $124,595 by the Iowa Board of Regents; and "Environmental Issues Instruction: Teacher Workshops for Feeding the World," awarded $16, 348 by the Iowa Department of Education.

.....Michael Fanelli, teaching - awarded The Distinguished Service Award by the Iowa String Teachers Association. He is only the third Iowa to receive this honor. He also is president-elect of ISTA and currently serves as president of the Iowa School Orchestra Association. He was recently inducted into Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, education honor societies, in recognition of his outstanding scholastic achievements in his doctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was appointed this year as musical director of the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra, a UNI Suzuki School affiliate organization. Fanelli also has been appointed an editor for the American Suzuki Journal and the International Society of Bassist Journal. He also has been asked by the Center for Black Music Research to write biographical/music essays on composers Roque Cordero and Adolphus C. Hailstork for the first edition of the International Dictionary of Black Composers.
.....Roger Kueter, Joane McKay and Mary Selke, teaching - were program organizers and coordinators for "Professional Development: Developing as a Profession," the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (IACTE) and Iowa Association of Teacher Educators (IATE) recent Spring Conference held on the UNI campus. Presentations were from national speakers via two-way interactive video, Regent College of Education deans, Iowa Department of Education and Iowa educators.
.....Duane McDonald, conference & visitor services - finished a three-year term, and was appointed to an additional two years on the Board of Directors for the Association of Conferences and Events Directors International at the ACED-I annual conference in Pittsburgh. He also facilitated a round-table discussion of wedding receptions and co-presented an open forum session entitled, "Events Issues: Talk With the Pros!" co-presented with Jane Sharar of Special Events, Iowa State University. In addition, McDonald will be chairing the ACED-I Marketing Committee next year.
.....Mohammed Rawwas, marketing - selected by the Student Organization Committee as the "Advisor of the Year" for the second year in a row. This decision was based on two submitted essays by the American Marketing Association and the International club of Business Students.
.....Patricia Sitlington, special education - received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Career Development and Transition at the international conference of the Council in Indianapolis. The Council for Exception Children is the largest professional organization in the field of special education.
.....Jill Uhlenberg, teaching - elected to the board of the National Coalition for Campus Child Care.
.....The Office of Public Relations, Center for Educational Technology and KUNI were among the award winners at the recent EPIC (Excellent Performance in Communications) banquet held at the UNI Commons Ballroom, sponsored by the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc. Darrell Fremont, Center for Education Technology, and Barbara Erickson, Office of Public Relations, received an award of excellence in the audiovisual/multimedia category for the UNI Retirement Recognition Program, produced for the UNI Foundation.
Receiving merit awards from the Office of Public Relations were: Janeen Stewart, Beth La Velle and Jeff Martin for Prospectus, a 4-color booklet for prospective students, parents and guidance counselors; Gerald Anglum, Beth LaVelle and Donovan Honnold for their in-state search publication, Pennant.
KUNI's Greg Shanley took top honors in the radio division, receiving
both an excellence and overall achievement awards for his radio feature,
"Young Artist Competition." A merit award was presented to Bill
Menner for his radio feature, "Jazz Group." Shanley and Menner
received an award of excellence in the radio hard news category for coverage
of the gubernatorial primary results.
