What is an I-O Psychologist?

Industrial-Organizational (I-O) psychologists contribute to an organization's success by improving the performance and well-being of its people. An I-O psychologist researches and identifies how behaviors and attitudes can be improved through hiring, training, providing feedback, and designing work.

What can I do with a graduate degree in I-O?

University of Northern Iowa I-O graduates are prepared for a career as an applied psychologist as well as for future studies at the doctoral level. Some of our graduates are employed in consulting firms or business organizations, while others are pursuing their doctorate at nationally recognized I-O programs.

New Faculty Member

Meet our newest faculty member, Dr. Robert Hitlan.. Rob comes to us from the University of Texas-El Paso, where he recently completed his dissertation on social exclusion. Rob also does research on workplace stressors such as being an ethnic minority and harassment. We're fortunate to have him on board!

Welcome Back Dr. Whitsett!

We also welcome back Dave Whitsett as a part-time I-O faculty member. Dave is a legendary professor at UNI, and we are lucky to get him back from retirement. He will distill his years of consulting experience into a graduate level class. This is a unique and wonderful opportunity for our students!

Faculty Research

I-O faculty members are actively engaged in research. Here are some of their recent accomplishments:

  • Adam Butler received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to study work-family integration in non-professional couples.

  • UNI will be well-represented at the 2003 conference of the Society for I-O psychology in Orlando:
    • Andrew Li, a graduate student, will present research on justice and goal-setting.

    • Rob Hitlan will present research on discrimination at work.

    • Adam Butler will present research on work-family integration.
