Past Conferences
The following is a brief summary of UNI's Annual CSBS Student Research Conference in past years.
2007

Dr. Christian Crandall, University of Kansas
April 21, 2007: The 14th Annual research
conference was held in Schindler Education Center. We had 33
poster presentations, 8 oral presentations, and 130 attendees. Attendees were from
Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Family Services, Textiles and
Apparel, History, Geography, Women's Studies, and Anthropology.
Poster presenters were from Psychology, Family Studies, Textiles and Apparel, and Sociology. The Keynote Speaker was Dr.
Christian Crandall of the Psychology Department at the University of Kansa
who spoke on The Inherent Superiority of the Social Science Student: The Things You Know and Others Don't. Panel discussions included: Finding
a Job with a BA in the Social and Behavioral Sciences; Graduate School: What's It Like and How Do I Get There?. We
were very pleased to have students from UNI, Iowa State University,
University of Iowa, and Grinnell College present their research in the poster
session. We were also pleased to have oral presentations from UNI, Wartburg College, Iowa State University, and Grinnell College. This year's Outstanding Undergraduate Poster was awarded to
Duoc Nguyen for his work on Political
Orientation, Race, and Dating Preferences: Are White Liberals More Positive Toward African-American Dating Partners? His advisor was Dr. Helen Harton of the UNI Psychology Department. The
Outstanding Graduate Poster was awarded to Qijuan Fang for her work on Cross-cultural Study of Relational Aggression. Her advisor was Dr. Cathy DeSoto of the UNI Psychology Department.
2006

April 22, 2006: The 13th Annual research
conference was held again in Schindler Education Center. We had 35
poster presentations and 130 attendees. Attendees were from
Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Family Services, Textiles and
Apparel, History, Geography, Women's Studies, and Anthropology.
Poster presenters were from Psychology, Family Services, History,
Geography, Textiles and Apparel, and Sociology. The Keynote Speaker was Dr.
Gary Wells of the Psychology Department at Iowa State University
who spoke on
Eyewitness Evidence: How Psychological Science is Helping Criminal
Justice. Panel discussions included: You Made It! Now What?: Finding
a Job with a BA in the Social and Behavioral Sciences; A Day in the
Life of a Graduate Student; and, How to Get into Graduate School. We
were very pleased to have students from UNI, Mount Mercy College,
University of Sioux Falls, Seoul National University, Iowa State
University and Wartburg College present their research in the poster
session. This year's Outstanding Undergraduate Poster was awarded to
Ryan Weipert, Jennifer Bumgarner, Abbie Close, Katie Johnson, Sophie
Banwarth, and Helen Harton for their work on Political
Orientation, Race, and Violation of Traditional Values. The
Outstanding Graduate Poster was awarded to Jennifer Grossheim and
Kim MacLin for their work on Aesthetic Preferences: The Effects
of Symmetry and Figure-Ground Contrast.

April 23, 2005: The 12th Annual research
conference was held again in Schindler Education Center. We had 63 poster
presentations and 180 attendees. The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Kathi
Heffner of the Psychology Department at Ohio University who gave the
following talk: "I Love You but You Make Me Sick: Marriage, Hormones and
Health." Panel discussions this year were Enhancing Your Undergraduate
Career with Professional Experiences, What is Graduate School
Really Like?, Getting a job with a BA in the Social Sciences,
and How to Get Into Graduate School. This year's Outstanding
Undergraduate Poster Award went to Jessica Mugge for her poster entitled:
“Effect of Violent Sports Games on Aggression Variables.” Her advisor was
Dr. Craig Anderson of the Iowa State Psychology Department. This year’s
Outstanding Graduate Poster Award went to Jennifer Grossheim for her
poster entitled: “The Effects of Jury-Defendant Similarity on
Pre-Deliberation Verdicts.” Her advisor was Dr. M. Kimberly MacLin of the
UNI Psychology Department.

April 24, 2004: The 11th Annual research conference was
held again in Schindler Education Center, but the name was altered
to the Student Research Conference (instead of Undergraduate) to
acknowledge the fact that some presenters are in fact graduate
students. We had 60 poster
presentation, 16 oral presentations and 175 attendees. The Keynote
Speaker was Dr. John J. Skowronski of the Psychology
Department at Northern Illinois University who gave the following
talk: "On The Feelings That Accompany Autobiographical
Memories: Social Discourse Helps To Accentuate the Positive and Eliminate
the Negative." Panel discussions this year were Enhancing Your
Undergraduate Career with Professional Experiences, What is Graduate School
Really Like?, and About to Graduate? Need a Job?
Look Here!. This year's Outstanding Poster Award went
to Jennifer Hardin for her poster entitled: "Predicting antisocial
workplace behaviors: Examining the interaction between workplace
exclusion and personality." Her advisor was Dr. Rob Hitlan of the

April 26, 2003: The 10th Annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center with a record number of
submissions, presentations and attendees. We had 64 poster
presentations, 16 oral presentations and over 200 attendees. The
Keynote Speaker was Dr. Keith Maddox of the Psychology
Department at Tufts University who gave a talk entitled Shades of
Black: Skin Tone Bias Among African Americans.
The UNI Invited Faculty Speaker was Dr. Kent Sandstrom of the
Sociology Department. He spoke on Living with HIV/AIDS in Iowa:
New Challenges and Prospects.
Panel discussions this year were News from the front lines:
Graduate students speak out, and, Employ me! Finding a job
with a B.A. in the Social Sciences. This year's Outstanding
Poster Award went to Bridget Waack of UNI [Waack, B., Peterson, H.
C., & MacLin, M. K. (April, 2003). What do I look like to you...A
criminal? Poster presented at The College of Social and
Behavioral Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference, Cedar Falls,
IA.].

April 20, 2002: The ninth annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were 55
presentations; 18 coming from other colleges. Approximately
100 students attended the conference. The guest speaker was Dr.
Mark Grey, Professor of Anthropology at the University of
Northern Iowa. Dr. Grey's presentation was entitled, "Immigration in
Iowa". The keynote speaker was Dr. Roy S. Malpass, Director
of Criminal Justice Program and Department of Psychology at the
University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Malpass gave a presentation
entitled, "Psychological Issues in Eyewitness Identification and
Facial Recognition". New this year was a concurrent discussion and
presentation section, which included discussions, entitled, "What
can I do with a B.A. in the Social Sciences?" "What is graduate
school like?" and oral presentations from the Iowa Sociological
Association. PHOTOS
April 21, 2001: The eighth annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were thirty-five
presentations, two coming from other colleges. Approximately 200
students attended the conference. The guest speaker was Dr.
Jacques Lempers, Professor of Human Development and Family
Studies at Iowa State University. Dr. Lempers addressed "Stress,
Parent Adolescent Child Relationships, and Adolescent Distress". The
keynote symposium speakers included: Dr. Brenda Bass, Kirsten
Linney, and Dr. Kyle Kostelecky, all from UNI's Department of
Design, Family, and Consumer Sciences . The symposium speakers
addressed "Current Research in Family Science". The panel discussion
"What can I do with a BA in the social sciences?" was still of great
interest to those in undergraduates in attendance.
April 8, 2000: The seventh annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were twenty-seven
presentations, two of which came from other colleges. Approximately
150 students attended the conference. The guest speaker was Dr.
John Hagedorn, Director of The Kenneth B. Clark Center for the
Study of Urban Violence at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Dr. Hagedorn addressed "Gangs, Drugs, and Violence in Urban
Settings". The keynote speaker, UNI Sociology Professor
Dr. Phyllis Baker addressed "Holding a Double Edged Sword:
Women in Substance Abuse Treatment". New in 2000 was the conference
web site. The panel discussion "What can I do with a BA in the
social sciences?" was as popular as ever.
April 24, 1999: The sixth annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were thirty-one
presentations, four of which came from other colleges. Approximately
150 students attended the conference. The guest speaker was Dr.
Diane Feldman, President of the Feldman Group, who spoke on
"Thinking About Politics". The keynote speaker, UNI Criminology
Professor, Dr. Michael Leiber addressed "Race, Context, and Juvenile
Court Processing". Additions in 1999 included an option for students
to present research at an oral presentation session and "Lunch
Trivia" questions. Also, a panel of social science graduates held a
discussion entitled "What can I do with a BA in the social
sciences?"
April 25, 1998: The fifth annual research conference was held
in Schindler Education Center. There were forty-two presentations,
thirteen of which came from other colleges. Approximately 300
students attended the conference. The guest speaker was Dr. Henry
Foster, Senior Advisor on Teen Pregnancy Reduction and Youth Issues
to President Clinton. Dr. Foster's topic was "Taming the Tempest of
Teen Pregnancy". Dr. Tom Connors, UNI Assistant Professor of
History, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Connors addressed "
Transforming the Family in Early Modern Ireland". New in 1998 was an
activity called "Table Talk". Each table at the conference had a
topical question relevant to the social sciences to be discussed by
those seated at a table. Also, a panel of social science graduates
held a discussion entitled "What can I do with a BA in the social
sciences?"
April 5, 1997: The fourth annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were sixteen
presentations. All students presenting were from UNI. Approximately
150 college students and about twenty high school students attended
the conference. The guest speaker was Dr. Thomas Walz, from
the University of Iowa's Department of Social Work. The topic of his
presentation was "Growing Old on the Electronic Highway: Towards a
Distinctive Approach to Social Work Research". The keynote speaker
was
Dr. William Downs, from UNI's Department of Social Work. Dr.
Downs spoke on "The Impact of Family Violence on Women's Adulthood
Problems". Also, a panel of social science graduates held a
discussion entitled "What can I do with a BA in the social
sciences?"
April 27, 1996: The third annual research conference was
held in Schindler Education Center. There were twenty presentations
at the conference, five of which came from other colleges.
Approximately 200 students attended the conference. The guest
speaker was Dr. Gary Wells, from Iowa State University's
Department of Psychology. The topic of the presentation was
"Eyewitness Testimony". The keynote speaker was Dr. Joel Wells,
from UNI Department of Design, Family, and Consumer Services and
Karen Wells, from UNI Women's Studies. The topic of discussion was
"Definitions of Sex and Sexuality". Also, a panel of social science
graduates held a discussion entitled "What can I do with a BA in the
social sciences?"
April 29, 1995: The second annual research conference was
held in Seerley Hall. There were thirty-one presentations at the
conference, seventeen of which came from other colleges.
Approximately 200 students attended the conference. The guest
speaker was Laurie Schipper, Executive Director of the Iowa
Coalition against Domestic Abuse. The topic of the presentation was
"Family Violence and Domestic Abuse". The keynote speaker was Dr.
David Whitsett, a UNI Psychology professor. The topic of
discussion was "Physical Fitness and Mental Health". Also, a panel
of social science graduates held a discussion entitled "What can I
do with a BA in the social sciences?"
April 23, 1994: The first annual research conference was
held in Seerley Hall. There were twenty-two presentations at the
conference. All students presenting were from UNI. The guest speaker
was Dr. Ruth Ann Johnson, from the Department of Psychology
at Augustana College. The topic of discussion was "Effective
Negotiation Skills". The keynote speaker was Dr. Clemens
Bartollas, from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at
UNI. The topic of the presentation was "Gang Behavior in Iowa".
Also, a panel of social science graduates held a discussion entitled
"What can I do with a BA in the social sciences?" |
