Call for Papers

Please consider participating in the 15th Annual University of Northern Iowa Social Science Research Conference by submitting a proposal on or before the March 12, 2008, deadline.

This conference is a great opportunity for professional development. You can participate by presenting your own research project, or as an attendee to learn more about research in the social sciences. ALL students from ALL majors in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences are encouraged to participate.

Our 2008 conference is designed to provide a forum for the exchange of research and ideas. You may submit proposals for poster presentations which are consistent with this purpose.

Who May Submit Proposals and Registration Fees
Any undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in a college or university may submit proposals for the conference. First authors must be students. The research presented should be of student work, and first authors in particular should have a solid command of the work being presented.

Outstanding Poster Award
The purpose of this award is to promote and acknowledge outstanding research conducted by students. Submissions will be reviewed as well as posters visited. One graduate student poster and one undergraduate student poster will be awarded whose poster presentation reflects excellence in research (broadly defined), clarity in presentation and personal knowledge in a discussion with judges. The awardees will be acknowledged near the end of the poster session. The poster author(s) will receive $50 each and have their name(s) on a plaque in the display case outside of the CSBS College office in Sabin Hall. The panel reserves the right not to make an award, as well as award any number of honorable mentions.
To enter, submitters will indicate on the registration form that they would like to be considered by checking the box on the online conference submission form.

Award Criteria
Winners are selected by a committee that considers the 350-word submission, the poster itself, and a conversation held with the presenter at the poster session. In the poster, the committee looks for a concise statement of the research problem, a clear statement of methods, appropriate data analysis, conclusions that are warranted by the data, an explanation of why the work is important, and a well organized and clear presentation. In the conversation with the presenter, the committee is interested in the applicant's level of understanding of the research, ability to describe the work to non-experts and experts, and the degree to which the work represents the student's own intellectual effort.
