The PSM is "an education aimed at future managers who will be able to move comfortably in the business of science." - USA Today
Biotechnology is technology based on biology, agriculture, food science, and medicine. Modern use of the term usually refers to genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies. However, the concept encompasses a wider range and history of procedures for modifying living things according to human purposes, going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants and "improvements" to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization.
The field of Biotechnology seeks to develop new applications and products and/or improve the quality of existing products that are of benefit to our society. The new Professional Science Masters (PSM) program in Biotechnology at the University of Northern Iowa emphasizes strengthening and enhancing molecular biology skills along with providing an understanding of the business and marketing aspects of biotechnology. The program is also focused on developing written and oral communication skills of students so that they can succeed in the various biotechnology sectors in the US and abroad.
